Get A Good Look At Christian Schooling ?

In case you have the important responsibility of figuring out what schooling state of affairs is best in your youngsters, then please take your time and make an informed choice primarily based on as much analysis as you can handle. There are quite a number of choices as of late, which is all the more a great motive for parents to take critically the job of offering the best possible education for his or her children. Public schooling, Christian training, and homeschooling are simply three of many choices accessible to families today.

Many Christian couples will choose to send their children via the Christian schooling system with out giving it a lot thought. It?s a Christian program, after all, so what might be the problem, proper? This occurs in a lot the identical means that non-Christian mother and father do not think twice about sending their youngsters to publich school. And whereas I am not suggesting that Christian education is a poor alternative, I am saying that it is an option to be thought-about amongst other good choices.

There are obvious advantages to picking Christian training for children. At first, there is no such thing as a higher place for children to be launched to the foundational beliefs of Christianity that during the school day as they develop up. So should you place an excessive precedence on your children being raised in the religion that you simply believe in, then you should take a superb look at the Christian education options in your area. See if there is a couple of Christian college available and discover out which program best fits the wants and beliefs of your family. Be warned, nevertheless, that generally choosing Christian schooling in your children means sacrificing a little bit bit in the precise schooling that they may learn. This isn?t always the case, fortunately, however I am studying that very often Christian education systems put issues like math or science on the backburner in the hopes of actually focusing in on religion issues and on tips on how to stay as Christians in a non-Christian world.

What is the most suitable option for your loved ones? No one could make that but you. All I can let you know is not to choose about Christian education or public training quickly. Take your time, do a little analysis, and talk to parents you trust that have put their youngsters by Christian education and public education to see what they would suggest. You will have to choose and selected on some things, so just begin to gather concepts and determine what issues you are and are not willing to compromise on.

Passive investing in stocks based on market cap :: Asset Allocation ...

istockphoto

One can passively invest one's whole stock portfolio based exclusively on market capitalization. The total market cap of a stock is price times the number of shares issued. For example, the percentage of the entire stock portfolio devoted to Microsoft would be the market value of all of Microsoft stock divided by the market value of all publicly traded stock in the world.

One way of passively investing one's stock portfolio exclusively by market cap is to place the entire stock portfolio in one broad index fund with both U.S. and foreign stocks. (Stock indexes weighed by market cap.)

An alternative to strict adherence to market cap is investment in several index funds (different slices of the stock universe) with automatic periodic rebalancing. For example, among the many stock index funds available are:

  • S & P 500 (large cap)
  • Midcap
  • Small-cap
  • European
  • Pacific
  • Emerging markets
  • Growth
  • Value

With an investment in several of these specialized index funds, one must decide the initial percentage of the stock portfolio to allocate to each fund. After making this initial decision, one can adhere to these percentages through automatic periodic rebalancing. That forces selling high and buying low.

To illustrate, suppose because of stock price changes, the Pacific Stock Index Fund comes to constitute a lower percentage of the portfolio than initially targeted, and the European Stock Index Fund is a higher percentage than target.

Automatic periodic rebalancing to target percentages forces one to sell the European Stock Index Fund (at a ?high? price) and purchase the Pacific Stock Index Fund (at a ?low? price).

(Rebalancing does involve transaction costs; the optimal interval between rebalancing is a complex question not addressed here. Also, I shall assume the investor does not engage in tactical asset allocation.)

Automatic rebalancing and index fund investing are both ?passive? strategies in that the stock portfolio is on auto-pilot. Nevertheless, the two approaches are different. Indeed, a tension exists between them.

In contrast to automatic rebalancing, strict adherence to market cap generally forces the investor into a ?momentum? approach: increasing investment in stocks appreciating in value.

To illustrate, assume a universe of only two stocks: X and Y, with equal market cap.

The investor buys of an index fund that weights by market cap.

Indirectly, the investor holds istockphoto One can passively invest one?s whole stock portfolio based exclusively on market capitalization. The total market cap of a stock is price times the number of shares issued. For example, the percentage of the entire stock portfolio devoted to Microsoft would be the market value of all of Microsoft stock divided by the [...] of X and istockphoto One can passively invest one?s whole stock portfolio based exclusively on market capitalization. The total market cap of a stock is price times the number of shares issued. For example, the percentage of the entire stock portfolio devoted to Microsoft would be the market value of all of Microsoft stock divided by the [...] of Y. Assume that this X stock doubles in value to ; this Y stock falls in value to

.

This results in a portfolio that is 80% in X and 20% in Y.

By staying put in a market-cap-weighted index fund, the investor has increased investment in the appreciating stock and decreased investment in the falling stock ? although there is not necessarily any reason to think that these stocks will continue to rise and fall, respectively.

A ?momentum? investor (who believes that stock price trends tend to persist) would be delighted with a portfolio that is now 75% in the appreciating stock X.

On the other hand, an investor who has opted for periodic automatic rebalancing would sell X and buy Y to restore the original 50/50 allocation, thereby selling X ?high? and buying Y ?low, ? somewhat like a contrarian active investor.

(Even within a specialized index fund, stocks that appreciate will constitute a larger percentage of the portfolio. That will please momentum investors and displease contrarians.)

To provide a simple illustration, suppose one investor chooses to invest its entire stock portfolio in a total stock U.S. market index fund (perhaps one that mimics the MSCI U.S. Broad index). Another investor decides to invest its entire stock portfolio as follows: X% U.S. large-cap index fund (perhaps an S&P 500 fund), Y% U.S. midcap index fund and Z% U.S. small-cap index fund. X%, Y% and Z% reflect the current relative market caps of those three categories. The second investor also decides to rebalance to those ratios once a year.

The two investors will start with roughly equivalent stock portfolios. Assume that after a year, the large-cap index increases 20%, and the midcap and small-cap indexes each decrease 20%.

The first investor will stay put. To rebalance back to the initial ratios, the second investor will sell some of the large-cap index fund and buy more of the midcap and small-cap index funds. The portfolios of the two investors will diverge.

In advance, it is impossible to know for certain which investor will do better over time. Nevertheless, the periodic rebalancing has the advantage of forcing the second investor to sell ?high? and buy ?low.?

(Even if one's entire stock portfolio consists of just a single comprehensive stock index fund, one can automatically periodically rebalance among stocks, bonds, and ?alternative? assets. This broad rebalancing would still provide a benefit. Nevertheless, the investor would lose the advantage of rebalancing among specialized stock index funds.)

In short, an investor has the choice between (1) one comprehensive stock index fund that weights by market cap or (2) several more specialized stock index funds. The latter permits more automatic periodic rebalancing to target percentages.

A tension exists between rebalancing and weighting by market cap.

EYES ON LONDON

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

REMEMBERING A CHAMPION

The memory of a late swimming champion looms large at the Olympic pool, especially as his best event ? the 100-meter breaststroke ? approaches Sunday.

Alexander Dale Oen of Norway died in April at age 26 from heart disease ? months before he was to be the leading hope for Norwegian swimming gold in London. He won the world championship in the 100-meter breaststroke last July.

Some swimmers said they were dedicating their swims to Dale Oen.

"We're carrying him with us all the time," countrywoman Sara Nordenstam said following her heat in the 400-meter individual medley. She said the swimmers will honor him by "swimming fast and remembering him and remember everything that he taught us and go for the goals that we set together."

THE REVIEWS ARE IN

The opening ceremony, particularly the queen's debut as a Bond girl, earned several positive reviews.

"I was worried that there was too much self-parody, that the world might be laughing at us," wrote columnist Giles Coren in The Times of London. "But they were laughing with us. They were silently awed."

He wasn't wrong.

"Often seen as reserved and unapproachable, the Queen changed all that alongside James Bond," wrote German newspaper Die Welt.

The 86-year-old Elizabeth greeted Bond actor Daniel Craig at Buckingham Palace and then appeared to fly to the stadium before parachuting to the ground. Moments later, the real Elizabeth appeared with husband Prince Philip to be greeted by the crowd.

The sequence has already provided the defining images of the games, according to Sydney's Daily Telegraph in Australia, where the queen also reigns.

"A few hundred years ago director Danny Boyle could have been sent to the Tower for even suggesting such treason," the newspaper said. "But as if to show how far England and the monarchy have come in that time, Her Majesty not only let Boyle get away with it. She was actually in on the joke."

BYE-BYE BIKINIS

It's a cover-up. The cool London evening forced beach volleyball stars to forgo the traditional bikini attire for warmer clothes.

Two-time defending gold medalists Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor of the United States wore long-sleeved shirts on top of bikini bottoms for their 21-18, 21-19 victory over Natalie Cook and Tasmin Hinchley, a match that started at 11 p.m. Saturday when the temperature was 63 degrees. The Australians wore long pants, with T-shirts under their bikini tops.

"It's cold," Walsh Jennings said, with a "what do you expect" look on her face. "It's 11 p.m. in London."

QUEEN'S ENCORE

Queen Elizabeth II returned to Olympic Park for an encore performance after her film debut as the latest Bond Girl, riding to the top of the 377-foot (115-meter) Orbit tower and visiting with fawning British Olympians in the athletes village.

Dressed in a royal blue silk dress, crepe coat and matching hat, the queen could be heard remarking at the views of the London skyline and countryside. She wore a brooch given to her in 1948 ? the last time London hosted the Olympics and four years before her accession to the throne.

"For her to come through and meet the athletes, and see where we're living, it was amazing," said Rose Anderson, 24, a member of the women's basketball team.

"She went inside one of the athletes' bedrooms and chatted to us. It was just awesome, especially after last night," she said.

SOLO TWITTER SPAT

Outspoken U.S. goaltender Hope Solo isn't happy about former player Brandi Chastain's commentary on NBC, and she's tweeting about it.

At one point, Chastain pointed out that a defender's responsibilities are: "Defend. Win the ball. And then keep possession. And that's something that (U.S. defender) Rachel Buehler actually needs to, I think, improve on in this tournament."

After the game, Solo rattled off four tweets about Chastain. She told Chastain to "lay off commentating about defending" and goalkeeping "until you get more educated" and "the game has changed from a decade ago."

"I feel bad 4 our fans that have 2 push mute," tweeted Solo, adding that she likes NBC soccer announcer Arlo White.

Chastain is one of the top all-time defenders for the U.S. team. A spokesman for NBC said the network would have no comment and that Chastain was unavailable for comment.

SPARKLING SMILE

Those aren't pearly whites sparkling when U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte breaks out a smile. They're diamonds.

Lochte popped in his grillz ? diamond-studded mouth jewelry ? for the victory ceremony after winning a gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley.

And Lochte is hoping to win some more medals to go with his precious stones.

"This is my year," Lochte said. "I know it and I feel it, because I've put in hard work. I've trained my butt off for four years ... and there's no better way to start this Olympics off than getting gold."

EDITED FOR TELEVISION

A choreographer is unhappy that his somber opening-ceremony segment was bypassed by NBC, which instead showed American viewers an interview with swimmer Michael Phelps.

The segment was described as an "honest expression of the fear of approaching death." But some in the British press have interpreted it as being a tribute to victims of bomb attacks in July 2005 that killed 52 commuters and four suicide bombers on London's transit network. During the BBC live coverage of the ceremony, commentator Hazel Irvine made the connection while the dance was taking place: "The excitement of that moment in Singapore seven years ago when London won the games was tempered with great sorrow the very next day," when the terror attacks took place.

NBC said it had no indication that the segment was a reference to the terrorist attacks. Said choreographer Akram Khan, a Londoner: "I am really sad that I couldn't show the work in America, and that really upsets me, because I don't think it's any more or less than the other pieces. It brings to mind the question ... that maybe it's too truthful."

NBC aired the ceremony on a tape-delayed basis and made editing changes.

WIN BY WALKOVER

Algerian boxer Mohamed Ouadahi won his opening Olympic bout without throwing a punch when his Georgian opponent, Merab Turkadze, couldn't make weight this morning.

The thing is, amateur boxers are still required to climb into the ring to get their hands raised even when they win by walkover. Ouadahi wore a grin when the ExCeL crowd ? not knowing this weird tradition ? booed the Georgian's unexplained absence and then sarcastically roared for Ouadahi's easiest victory.

Ouadahi laughed and flexed his right bicep in appreciation.

AND FROM THE TV END ...

This from AP Television Writer David Bauder just now:

"An opening ceremony from the mother country with a Beatle, a queen and Mr. Bean proved irresistible for viewers in the United States, with a record-setting 40.7 million people watching NBC's first night of summer Olympics coverage. The Nielsen company said Saturday that London's opener was the most-watched opening ceremony of any summer or winter Olympics. It topped the previous mark of 39.8 million people who watched the 1996 Atlanta Olympics begin, and the 34.9 million who watched the colorful first night from Beijing four years ago."

Everyone's warned to silence mobile phones at press conferences with medal winners. So where was that rap tune coming from at Ryan Lochte's news conference after he won gold in the men's 400 meter individual medley?

From Lochte's mobile.

The ringtone? "I have a lot of them," Lochte said. "Probably something from Lil Wayne."

Steve Futterman of CBS, whose question was interrupted, cracked, "If you win a gold, you get to leave your phone on."

ESET Smart Security 5 review | Privacy PC

Posted by david b. on July 29, 2012

Outstanding usability and excellently balanced feature set make ESET Smart Security an unmistaken choice.

Download

Being light on system resources and offering a commendably high degree of Internet protection are prime ?business cards? of ESET Smart Security. The company behind this particular product, as well as quite a few other security oriented solutions, is truly an old stager in the industry, its origin dating back to the late 1980s when the first known computer viruses came to be. ESET has since succeeded in becoming one of the world?s most commercially successful IT security projects, with over 500 employees and millions of satisfied customers all over the globe. Covering the niches of antivirus, antispyware, mobile security and Internet security both for home and business, the vendor delivers all-inclusive protection, dedicated support for a vast customer base, and sets remarkable usability benchmarks.

Some of the things most commonly associated with ESET Smart Security are great user experience, well-balanced feature set and an extensive list of threats it is fit to take care of. More specifically, the benefits include proactive protection based on ESET?s innovative ThreatSense technology, outstanding performance, minimum annoyance, emphasis on timely updates, Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS), parental controls, antispam, game mode, external device scanning, and more.

Since the overall impression is derived from details, our intent here is to single out specific facts about this application and test it by several pre-defined criteria so as to measure its functionality and reliability, and put it all on a tangible scale.

System Requirements

Operating System:

  • Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / 7

Hardware:

  • Processor: Intel or AMD x86-x64
  • 55 MB free disk space

Usability

Availability of 30-day free trial along with the commercial distributive calls forth the first choice you are to make here. Notwithstanding the pretty large functional load on the program, it turned out a trifle to use. Installation went smooth and quite fast, but for one minor thing that kind of added an additional click to the procedure, i.e. a screen asking whether you are willing to have the PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) protection activated. We?d rather this feature was included into the security suite by default without the user being asked during setup. And still, this wasn?t really an issue, so the app installed within a little over a minute, which is perfectly fine. We noted that the software doesn?t require a mandatory reboot after setup ? that?s sort of a pleasure to know because this particular thing tends to annoy some users.

User interface might appear simplistic, but that?s definitely a positive trait. We believe the absence of upper menu to be a virtue, as all the main items are fitting perfectly into the left-hand navigation pane ? so why occupy excessive GUI space? We liked the color scheme, too. Light-blue is dominating here; we guess this contributes to the peace of mind the vendor tried to ?hard-code? into the app.

ESET Smart Security?s interface turned out to be sufficiently informative, displaying your current protection level split by a number of targeted areas. The ?Computer scan? tab provides additional options such as showing scan with a log in a new window and enabling shutdown after scan. Using ?Setup? menu, you can enable / disable specific protection modules within four sections: Computer (Real-time file system protection, HIPS, Gamer mode), Network (Personal Firewall), Web and email (Web access protection, Email client protection, Antispam protection), and Parental control. Clicking ?Tools? enables defining your security preferences, temporarily disabling protection, managing the quarantine, accessing advanced options etc. It?s handy that hovering with your mouse over GUI items displays brief infotips on what a particular feature does.

The product?s performance parameters ensure you don?t have to wait long for the key tasks to be completed. CPU usage goes up once in a while during regular updates, but this in no way affects productivity of your system. On the whole, ESET Smart Security is a really resource saving utility that doesn?t put much of a burden on a PC, which shows it to advantage as compared to most of the competing programs.

Features

What makes a good Internet security suite is a feature set that facilitates controls and contributes to protection on an appropriate level. Let?s see if that?s the case with ESET Smart Security 5. Below is a brief overview of each key feature integrated into this application:

  • ThreatSense Technology denotes ESET?s understanding of antivirus protection. This is a sophisticated engine composed of advanced heuristics (code analysis, emulation, generic signatures) and the conventional malware signatures, enabling timely detection of zero-day infections and new viruses belonging to known families. This contemporary approach is a step towards catching up with cyber criminals, no matter how hard an objective that is. ThreatSense proved to effectively detect and neutralize worms, viruses, trojans, rootkits, adware, potentially dangerous applications and other pests.
  • Antispyware feature complements the antivirus to respond to the varied digital threatscape out there. This component targets online parasites that aim at violating your privacy and deploying identity theft.
  • Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) is liable for monitoring network activity to spot and cease unauthorized access attempt or other malicious behavior. The bad packets therefore get dropped to help you evade further outcomes of infestation, intrusion or unsolicited modifications made to your system.
  • Cloud-Enhanced Whitelisting, or ESET Live Grid, is a reputation-based technology powered by the cloud environment to ensure fast detection of malware items. This technique is capable of distinguishing between reputable files and viruses, thus you get protection against the newest bad stuff and social media exploits in real time.
  • To prevent contamination from optical storage devices (CD, DVD) or USB memory drives, ESET Smart Security accommodates Removable Media Control feature. It disables autorun from these drives and blocks by device ID.
  • Firewall complements the corresponding default feature provided by the operating system to augment protection value and implement additional counter-intrusion and anti-hack measures.
  • Antirootkit is a feature which is intended to expose and intercept malicious objects that are made to do a great job hiding certain processes on the compromised machine. Rootkits attempt to keep security software from detecting malware executables, thus promoting further infestation of a PC. ESET therefore has a countermeasure of its own for this latent menace.
  • Antispam functionality is aimed at blocking potentially dangerous or misleading emails, including attached objects that might be bundled with trojans or other insecure items.
  • Parental Controls feature makes it feasible to manage your kids? web-surfing activity, allowing restrictions by website category (adult, gambling etc.), specific URL and even the time spent online.
  • Internet Security Training is completely unique about ESET Smart Security. This comes in the form of interactive instructions on appropriate online behavior, outlining security tips and precautions to take while browsing the web.
  • Unwilling to get pop-ups and frustration from routine security tasks triggered while you are playing games on your PC? Gamer Mode does the trick here by suspending popup alerts, scanning and scheduled tasks when you are in full-screen mode. While your computer remains protected, the security modules require no interaction on your end. Gamer Mode also keeps you from getting distracted while viewing videos or doing full-screen presentations.

Efficiency

In terms of overall protection effectiveness, there is some room for ambiguity. Results obtained by a number of authoritative evaluation resources that tested ESET Smart Security 5 state it does not rank to be in the very top of the grading. For instance, AV-TEST?s latest scores by protection criterion are 3.5 out of 6.0 for both Windows XP and Windows 7, being decent results, yet lower than the industry average. Things with repair are somewhat worse, ranging 2.0-4.0 out of 6.0 for Windows XP and Windows 7 respectively, both results passing their certification. Despite the above somewhat mediocre rates, on the other hand, the product did a fairly good job in our unbiased test, detecting and removing most of the malicious components from the infested lab machine ? at least, none of the critical threats that could inflict serious damage to the system were missed. Furthermore, the latest AV-Comparatives retrospective test ranked ESET number 6 out of the total of 17 most popular security applications. Moreover, the really low false positives rate and good across-the-board user feedback are by no means to be neglected. From where we sit, we are mostly inclined to affirm that ESET Smart Security is a program that will keep you generally safe and allow for no irrecoverable system damage.

Help & Support

ESET?s support is split into two groups: home and business, each one containing an extensive number of options to get help when you need it. Home support (the one applicable for ESET Smart Security) is composed of Frequently Asked Questions, documentation, knowledgebase videos, user forum, online form for submitting your case (not to be confused with live support). In regards to direct support, the telephone contacts are kind of hard to find on their website. The ?Contact? page does contain the customer service number, but shouldn?t it be indicated right there on ?Support? page as well? You can additionally follow customer support in Twitter where they add links to new articles and videos related to a variety of issues. But the really unique thing about this product is the ?Cybesecurity Training? interactive module which appears to be a comprehensive and thorough tutorial on how to protect your PC and online identity ? this is probably one of the best instances of customer security orientation that we have seen.

+/- (Pros/Cons)

  • Trial version available
  • Easy to use
  • Light on system resources
  • Very low false positives rate
  • Remarkable parental controls
  • ?Cybersecurity training? feature
  • Unstable repair scores
  • Support: no live chat, phone numbers hard to locate
  • Expensive

Bottom line

ESET Smart Security is one of the least obtrusive Internet security suites we have tested. Its features are more than enough for assuring convenience and appropriate protection for your online activities. While repair efficiency and overall protection scores are fluctuating across different tests, the chance of outer intrusion going through, or critical infections infiltrating into your machine is negligible. Outstanding usability and excellently balanced feature set make this product an unmistaken choice.

Big crowd cheers Renton River Days parade; Liberty Park bustles

By Rochelle Adams

For the Renton Reporter

The IKEA Renton River Days parade began Saturday morning with blaring police sirens and flashing lights. Police officers on motorcycles led the procession down Third Avenue as locals lined the street, sitting on blankets and fold out chairs.

A variety of groups followed ranging from fire fighters to veterans and pirates to clowns.

?I love it,? Marcus Lee Jones said of the parade. He attended the event for the first time this year to see his daughter perform during the parade with the Dangerettes Drill Team. ?I love seeing everybody?s community coming together and doing their thing.?

He particularly enjoyed the beginning of the parade with the police.

?I got law enforcement in my family,? Jones said.

Crowd members screamed as the Seafair Pirates ship float let out an explosive crack like a canon and shot smoke into the air.

?Everybody loves the pirates,? said Sean Levias, who has attended Renton River Days every year since 2003. ?That big boom always scares the kids so we have to teach them when to hold their ears and everything, but it?s fun.?

Levias said he was enjoying the drill teams, the clowns and bands, with his favorite being the Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline.

While the group performed, Levias clapped in time with the drums cheered.

?I?ve been in drill team since I was a kid,? he said. ?I love bands. I used to be a drum major back in the day. It?s something I love and am passionate about.?

River Days continues Sunday at Liberty Park and nearby venues, with the Rubber Ducky Derby at 4:30 p.m. off the? Houser Street bridge over the Cedar River.

The festival portion of the event takes place at Liberty Park with face painting, a petting zoo, live musical performances, a food court and several other activities.

The petting zoo attracted several children and adults who waited to take their turn at feeding and petting the animals.

Eight-year-old ?Cameron Brown asked if he could buy one of the goats as a grey and white goat ate feed from his palm. His mother ?Taryn Lewis ?said no, but bought him more treats to feed the goat with.

?This is what River Days is about,? Brown said.

Lewis and Brown attend the event every year for the zoo as well as the vendors and other activities.

?There are a lot of things for him to do,? she said. ?He just enjoys coming down and doing all this stuff and eating and seeing all the people.?

Peter Goss attended the Renton River Days with his wife and two children. They attended the event last year and decided to come again this year after reading about it in the newspaper.

?We love it,? he said. ?It?s a lot of fun. The kids are old enough now that they really enjoy the kids activities and just hanging out and having fun.?

The Goss family also enjoyed the food court. While the kids went for the corndogs and ice cream, Goss said his favorite was the stir fry.

15 magical pieces of tech that need to stop

1 hr.

They were supposed to make everything better. And maybe they did, a little. But it's time for them to go away now. Sorry, QR codes. It's been real.?

?1. QR Codes

Imagine a hyperlink, except instead of actual readable text that you can type in, it's some weird ziggurat that gives no hint of where it's going. Also, instead of clicking on it, you have to take a picture of it with your camera, and you're probably going to have to take that picture three or four times before it works, and a lot of the time it's going to send you to either a non-mobile site or a dead link. If they all disappeared tomorrow, not one person in the entire world would care, not at all.

2. Routers

For some reason, they all look like they were made in 1995 and most of them act that way too. Everything they do would be much better in a scaled down, Airport-Express-style dongle. Time to burn this one down and start again.

3. Browser plugins

Flash is pulling out of the mobile world (after years of trying to break in) and Silverlight is ruining lives on a daily basis. Soon HTML5 will replace them entirely ? browser plugins don't exist on the iPhone or iPad and they won't exist on Windows 8 RT ?? but in the meantime there are a lot of websites with gaping holes in them, like a newspaper attacked by old lady clipping coupons.

4. Traffic cameras

The?rule was, if a cop caught you speeding, you got a ticket. It was a great system, both for the Smokey-and-the-Bandit factor and because, if you were only a little bit over the line, the officer would usually let it slide. Mailing tickets to people just because they got from point A to point B a little ahead of the curve is cheating, and it moves us towards a creepy automotive panopticon where the force of law is both intangible and omnipresent. But mostly, it's just lame.

5. Inductive charging?

Another idea that's been kicking around for a while without ever taking off. If it's not built into the phone, like the Palm Pre, it's not any easier than plugging it in.

6. Bluetooth audio

This started out as a good idea ? especially the speakers ? but it took 15 years to produce a decent product. Time to call it a day. We're better off with speaker wire.

7. The remote control

True story: I recently visited a friend who was housesitting, and it took us 10 minutes to figure out how to turn on the TV. There were three remotes, and each one had 40 buttons on it, except for the Apple TV remote, which didn't have a power button. Just put it in an app.

8. The cable box?

Speaking of which, here's a strange box that requires another remote control. Destroy! Or get it over with and shove it inside of an?Xbox or Apple TV already.

9. Software license keys?

Hard to enter, easy to crack. Authentication shouldn't be this difficult.

10. Cables For everything

Too many cables. Toomanycables. Too many, cables. Too.?Many cables.

11. The printer/scanner/fax

A surprising number of people still get one of these when they buy a computer, even though there's no reason to do any of these three things, and if you ever run out of ink or toner you will suffer the tortures of the damned. The sooner we stop expecting paper copies of things, the better.

12. Blu-Ray?

A lot of loose copies of Transformers 3 were handed out trying to make this one happen. And the movie looked great! Unfortunately, nobody you know owns a Blu-Ray player, and nobody wants to make a computer that deals with them. You're better off streaming.

13. The power brick

It's enough to make you wish we'd stuck with direct current.

14. Facebook comments

Designed to bring civility to web comments by attaching real people's names to them. Because if you know Richard Morris here is the person saying crazy things, he won't say them, right? Wrong. It continues to be a bottomless will of spiritual death and plain-old web-design misery.

15. Standalone anti-virus software?

It's crazy that this still exists. Just bake it into the OS already.

What Jesse Jackson Jr.?s move to Mayo Clinic could mean

CHICAGO (AP) ? The announcement that Jesse Jackson Jr. had been transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota pinned down his whereabouts for the first time in weeks and gave clear confirmation that the Illinois congressman is suffering from depression.

It also was the first mention that he's now being treated for a "gastrointestinal issue," which some experts said Saturday was a sign his condition is becoming more complicated.

The Chicago Democrat and son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson has been on a secretive leave of absence for nearly seven weeks, during which his office has released only occasional snippets of information, including that he was undergoing treatment for a "mood disorder" at an undisclosed inpatient facility.

A new, three-sentence written statement from the congressman was distributed by the Mayo Clinic late Friday during the national broadcast of the Olympics' opening ceremony, when public attention was more likely fixed half a world away.

As in the past, the statement gave scant detail, an apparent ongoing strategy in the face of pressure from congressional colleagues and constituents clamoring for an in-depth explanation.

It said he had been transferred to the Mayo Clinic for "extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues," but gave no information on the nature of his depression, where Jackson was being treated prior to arriving at the Mayo Clinic or his progress.

The clinic said Saturday it could not release anything further.

Mention of a gastrointestinal problem raised new questions ? whether it's linked to the depression, entirely unrelated or a complication from a 2004 procedure he underwent to help him lose weight.

"Certainly some people do, as part of their depression or anxiety disorder, manifest it with gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea," said Matthew Lilly, a psychiatrist in Rochester, Minn., who did a yearlong fellowship at Mayo in 2010 before going into private practice.

"But for them to even comment on that would, to me, sound as if it's a significant issue and not just a mild symptom associated with his illness," he said.

The Mayo Clinic has a highly rated gastrointestinal department as well as a free-standing inpatient psychiatric unit, said John Anderson of the Associates in Psychiatry and Psychology in southeastern Minnesota.

He said people receiving psychiatric care are often transferred to the clinic when a physical illness develops since both can be treated there.

"Mayo does an excellent job in terms of combining those, so they can treat what's essentially a dual diagnosis," Anderson said.

Phone messages left Saturday for Jackson's spokesman weren't immediately returned.

There was no word Saturday on how long Jackson might remain at the Mayo Clinic.

Typically, Mayo will keep someone as a psychiatric inpatient anywhere from several days to several weeks, Lilly said, though he added the use of the phrase "extensive inpatient evaluation" suggested to him it could be longer for Jackson.

"That would be pretty unusual for someone to stay as an inpatient more than a couple of weeks unless there were some pretty complicated issues going on," Lilly said.

The Mayo Clinic has treated other high-profile figures, including Saudi King Abdullah, and has a reputation for top-level security and strict patient privacy, which is evidently important to the congressman and those around him.

Clinic spokesman Ginger Plumbo said it released the brief statement only because Jackson's staff requested it.

"We would never just release information about any patient without their request or consent," Plumbo said.

The timing of Jackson's medical leave has raised questions, in part because Jackson is facing an ethics investigation in the U.S. House connected to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The congressman went on leave June 10, but his office didn't disclose it until weeks later. Initially, his office said Jackson was being treated for exhaustion. Since then, the office has said his condition was more serious and required inpatient medical treatment.

Earlier this month, a statement from an unidentified doctor said Jackson was receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for "a mood disorder."

The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations that Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for the then-governor appointing him to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat.

Jackson was not charged and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Treatment Depends On The Specific Type Of Substance Abuse

Drug addiction is a disease that takes over the individual's body over a period and wreaks havoc to the extent that the patient is unable to get over this sickness. The patient needs to be admitted into the specific drug rehabilitation centers that deal with their type of addiction. Treatment is provided according to the severity of the condition and substance abuse. The patient receives emergency treatment similar to that provided in hospitals for other complications that prove life-threatening. The patient can expect to get back to normal life after going through the treatment at the center.

A patient may start off by finding that he is addicted to a particular substance, such as alcohol or certain types of drugs, after taking it for a while. It is possible that he may be suffering from two or more types of substance abuse. There are several types of treatment offered at the drug rehabilitation centers. Each person is evaluated before the treatment is provided for his specific condition.

One of the most common addictions today is when patients may become addicted to prescription drugs. They may be taking a drug legitimately with a prescription from a doctor to cope with pain, anxiety problems or to get out of depression. Once they get habituated to taking the drug, they find it very difficult to stop the habit. They start acquiring more even when it is not required. This type of addiction develops and the patient does not have to go out and illegally purchase the same as they are available over the counter. They begin to take extra medication as they require more of the same as they have become addicted to the medication.

These types of illegal drugs can be categorized under two headings. Meth, cocaine and heroin are harsh drugs that can prove to be life-threatening. Patients are unable to recover from this type of addiction easily. They may have to undergo unconventional treatment to get rid of this addiction. Patients require will power and strong support to get out of this obsession.

Patients who are addicted to cannabis may get out of a jail sentence quicker than a person caught with cocaine. However, this does not rule out the fact that it is an addictive substance. The patient who is addicted to cannabis may recover faster though he requires tremendous willpower and a support group that can help him overcome the dependency.

Local Company, Park Select, Launches Nationwide Parking Franchise

Park Select, a local parking management firm, is expanding operations through franchise sales nationwide. They are announcing the sale of their first franchise unit in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Wilmington, NC (myPressManager.com) July 27, 2012

Established in 2001 in Wilmington, North Carolina as a parking management firm, offering services to area business and parking lot owners; Park Select has now become the newest franchised business model in North Carolina. The first Park Select franchise was sold this month to business owners Dan and Eva Brown of Raleigh, North Carolina. Plans for a second Park Select Coastal franchise, which will include all North Carolina beaches, will soon be finalized and other locations as far west as California are currently in negotiation. As small business owners themselves, Park Select founders Kirk and Sandra Iventosch recognized the need for affordable parking management. ?We were restaurant owners and our parking lot was constantly abused. We couldn?t afford the negative impact of towing,? explained Sandra, ?but hiring an outside firm or paying our own employees to monitor the lot wasn?t cost effective. We realized that business owners like ourselves needed a third alternative.? The resulting company, Park Select offers hourly monitoring and parking enforcement to business and property owners regardless of the lot size and at no cost to the lot owner. Park Select?s fees are paid by issuing fines to any parking violators identified in the lots they manage. ?It?s a win-win for everyone,? says Sandra, ?The lot owner gets parking optimization for free, our fee is paid by the violator, legitimate local paid parking is utilized more frequently, and even the violator wins when they don?t get towed.? Park Select?s client base increased as they added other parking management services, including pay parking and tenant parking. The success of their unique business model in Wilmington made Park Select executives question what other markets throughout the US might benefit from their services. Forming Park Select Franchising Opportunities, they developed the tools and training programs to help business owners in other cities duplicate their success. In an industry dominated by fast food and automotive services, Park Select Franchising Opportunities is the first and only parking management franchise system. Their stated goal is to change the parking industry, one lot at a time. Through franchise sales, Park Select may do just that, one city at a time.

Mixing Your Film Within the Electronic digital Get older | Desert Rock ...

When I stay here dealing with merely one professional over a deck fitted using the newest associated with digital camera methods, I cannot aid through think of how long we?ve got can be found in combining movies : and how several things stay the same.

Initially when I first were only available in this particular industry, we?d genuine movie play back for you to problem yourself together with locking sync and 2? recording outside patio?s to adapt the happy couple. These days, we all help a smaller amount individuals and even more electronic guidance * nevertheless the principles of good sound re-recording can be applied.

In depth below are a number of my personal tricks to get the maximum in time your current mix and ensure that you are acquiring all of that you can out of your period.

WORK IN TEN Moment Fly fishing reels ? this is actually the sector regular and also adjusts for you to approx. 1000 feet of 35mm video. We?d crack the actual film around match this size (due to size organic stock reels) and it is a great mixing up training today also. Employed in five second blending fishing reels means we can locking mechanism sound files along with audio needs one section of the film even though nonetheless slicing the other. Although it can be great to blend in baitcasting reel get, by doing this you don?t have to if you are awaiting more in depth appear croping and editing operate or perhaps a baitcasting reel is being re-edited on account of image worries..

DIALOG/MUSIC/FX/AIR ? Look closely at specific audio locations one at a time. Listen to the actual transitions and exactly how the work sits collectively * however identify your own attention to particular elements inside combine. Start with dialog clearness then music harmony and just how the idea has an effect on the ultimate mix. Will The music activity Impede OF Dialogue CLARITY. The most important issue you will possess is making sure frequency higher exactly what the artists assert. Add Audio FX wherever required and also sea salt along with Atmosphere or even Air flow paths to be able to complete the holes when needed. Low-level site visitors, the particular appears associated with ?room tone? documented on established ? each one is helpful while finishing one further Mix as they can fill up lifeless air flow or revise details in between audio tracks.

KNOW One?s body * In America, Pro-Tools may be the software preferred by sound editing and combining. Inside European countries, Logic is utilized generally. Irrespective of the body, you should know the way your authors and mixer would like their own sound recording provided. Most will need a great OMF supply of your respective sound recording from the photo enhancing method. Watch out because new Last Cut Times won?t offer this particular function as of the producing. Appear editors works along with your unique monitors enhancing them more conversation taking (ADR) to exchange discussion which is marred through technical troubles along with add Foley components (post-recorded synchronous consequences) too.

Be careful about your Fly fishing reel Then Combine That * Will not commence mixing up till you might have watched the particular fly fishing reel right through towards the stop. Invest Your FADERS Upward To make Records About AREAS THAT Turmoil Or even Fail. Don?t be concerned regarding moving issues around to fit because this is frequent. It is true. A combination actually will be the final revise for your movie. If you view the catch their whole, you get a better really feel on the views at hand and the way they flow straight into the other person. Having an overview of the following 10 minutes in the image, you are not having too much in mind ? and you have adequate review to understand framework for that operate.

BOUNCES, Back-up As well as Atmosphere ? End a new reel and also jump it out (blend along) for your put again together with photo. Back up The particular Program about another drive and hang a copy from the Rebound for your Cloud Program (I use Dropbox) for simple gain access to through everyone as needed. The actual industrial engineer will likely be keeping duplicates of the session as well as duplicates which might be out dated also. This never is painful to get way too many replicates of your sound pros plus your work on these at the distinct time and date.

When the photograph is actually Mixed, display screen this for an viewers as soon as possible. As huge as it is possible to inside the finest title of setting you can get. Expect if you should go back straight into alter things following this celebration. Experiencing the picture with clear ear and with a bunch (with out preventing as well as starting each fly fishing reel) will certainly affect your final sonic choices. This is an essential stage mainly because it lets you lastly visit your film since your audience sees it * and you will be astonished at the amount of concerns you?d and exactly how flexible an active presentation may be. You?ll come in contact with brand-new areas to visit again and you have to determine in case your spending budget, plan and also motion picture can hold these ultimate sound changes.

Blending will be the ultimate sugar around the cake for many filmmaker and also tremendously satisfying mainly because it indicates you?re practically done. It?s the time and energy to set everything together and discover the video in the greatest gentle ? it needs time to work ? and also long hours at the blending gaming system. If you?re able to carry out 20 min inside ten a long time, you?re carrying out good. Don?t dash using your music change and blend as it is one of the few places that people tend to be unforgiving. They will often reduce a poor composition or perhaps fragile cinematography ? however they will certainly dislike you in case your video looks bad. Coloration Correction and other visible unique features is likely to make the motion picture look wonderful ? nevertheless without a strong Mix at the rear of anyone, your current movie will suffer. Look closely at the Mix and take advantage of the better of today?s digital application arranged by being crystal clear, to the point along with dynamic. Your own viewers can many thanks for persistence.

Russia accuses US of 'justifying terror' in Syria

Russia on Wednesday lashed out at the United States for backing the armed opposition to the Syrian regime, saying Washington's failure to condemn the July 18 blast that killed top security officials meant it was justifying terror.

"This is quite an awful position, I cannot even find the words to make clear how we feel," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters. "This is directly justifying terrorism. How can this be understood?"

Lavrov expressed bewilderment at calls on Russia to clarify its position on Syria, saying Moscow's policy was crystal-clear and it was the West whose actions were contradictory.

He criticised the US ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice, saying she had argued that the attacks in Damascus meant the UN Security Council had to agree a sanctions resolution against Syria last week that Russia later vetoed.

"In other words, to say it in plain Russian, this means 'we (the United States) will continue to support such terrorist acts for as long as the UN Security Council has not done what we want'," Lavrov said.

Russia has repeatedly rejected accusations Moscow is backing the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in the crisis, claiming it has an even-handed approach while rebuking the West for siding with the rebels.

Yoga may help stroke survivors improve balance

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? Group yoga can improve balance in stroke survivors who no longer receive rehabilitative care, according to new research in the American Heart Association journal Stroke.

In a small pilot study, researchers tested the potential benefits of yoga among chronic stroke survivors -- those whose stroke occurred more than six months earlier.

"For people with chronic stroke, something like yoga in a group environment is cost effective and appears to improve motor function and balance," said Arlene Schmid, Ph.D., O.T.R., lead researcher and a rehabilitation research scientist at Roudebush Veterans Administration-Medical Center and Indiana University, Department of Occupational Therapy in Indianapolis, Ind.

The study's 47 participants, about three-quarters of them male veterans, were divided into three groups: twice-weekly group yoga for eight weeks; a "yoga-plus" group, which met twice weekly and had a relaxation recording to use at least three times a week; and a usual medical care group that did no rehabilitation.

The yoga classes, taught by a registered yoga therapist, included modified yoga postures, relaxation, and meditation. Classes grew more challenging each week.

Compared with patients in the usual-care group, those who completed yoga or yoga-plus significantly improved their balance.

Balance problems frequently last long after a person suffers a stroke, and are related to greater disability and a higher risk of falls, researchers said.

Furthermore, survivors in the yoga groups had improved scores for independence and quality of life and were less afraid of falling.

"For chronic stroke patients, even if they remain disabled, natural recovery and acute rehabilitation therapy typically ends after six months, or maybe a year," said Schmid, who is also an assistant professor of occupational therapy at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis and an investigator at the Regenstrief Institute.

Improvements after the six-month window can take longer to occur, she said, "but we know for a fact that the brain still can change. The problem is the healthcare system is not necessarily willing to pay for that change. The study demonstrated that with some assistance, even chronic stroke patients with significant paralysis on one side can manage to do modified yoga poses."

The oldest patient in the study was in his 90s. All participants had to be able to stand on their own at the study's outset.

Yoga may be more therapeutic than traditional exercise because the combination of postures, breathing and meditation may produce different effects than simple exercise, researchers said.

"However, stroke patients looking for such help might have a hard time finding qualified yoga therapists to work with," Schmid said. "Some occupational and physical therapists are integrating yoga into their practice, even though there's scant evidence at this point to support its effectiveness."

Researchers can draw only limited conclusions from the study because of its small number of participants and lack of diversity. The study also didn't have enough participants to uncover differences between the yoga and control groups. The scientists hope to conduct a larger study soon.

Researchers also noticed improvements in the mindset of patients about their disability. The participants talked about walking through a grocery store instead of using an assistive scooter, being able to take a shower and feeling inspired to visit friends.

"It has to do with the confidence of being more mobile," Schmid said. Although they took time to unfold, "these were very meaningful changes in life for people."

Ancient Poop Gives Clues to Modern Diabetes Epidemic

The ancient Native Americans of the desert Southwest subsisted on a fiber-filled diet of prickly pear, yucca and flour ground from plant seeds, finds a new analysis of fossilized feces that may explain why modern Native Americans are so susceptible to Type II diabetes.

Thousands of years of incredibly fibrous foods, 20 to 30 times more fibrous than today's typical diet, with low impact on the blood sugar likely left this group vulnerable to the illness when richer Anglo foods made their way to North America, said study researcher Karl Reinhard, a professor of forensic sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.?

"When we look at Native American dietary change within the 20th century, the more ancient traditions disappeared." Reinhard told LiveScience. "They were introduced to a whole new spectrum of foods like fry-bread, which has got a super-high glycemic index."

The glycemic index of a food is a measure of how fast its energy is absorbed into the bloodstream. It's measured on a scale of 1 to 100, with 1 being the slowest absorbing with the least effect on blood sugar. The native people who lived in the deserts of Arizona would have likely eaten traditional stews with glycemic indexes around 23, Reinhard found. Foods scoring lower than 55 are considered "low-GI" foods. [7 Foods Your Heart Will Hate]

Modern food and modern disease

Members of Southwest Native American tribes are more susceptible than Caucasians to Type II diabetes, which happens when the body either doesn't produce enough insulin to break down sugar from food, or when the body's cells fail to recognize the insulin it does produce.

Researchers have long hypothesized that a "thrifty gene" (or, more likely, genes) acquired through feast and famine makes Native American populations more prone to this chronic disease. The idea is that people who were able to rapidly adapt to both lean times and times of plenty would have done better in ancient times. Today, the modern diet has rendered famine rare in the developed world, but the body continues to respond to times of plenty as if starvation is around the corner. Diabetes and obesity can result.?

Reinhard and his colleagues now suggest that feast and famine may not be necessary for the "thrifty gene" hypothesis to make sense. Basically, Reinhard said, an extremely low-calorie, high-fiber diet made the ancient Native American gut a paragon of efficiency. With the arrival of whites, the diet changed faster than physiology could keep up with it. In other words, the digestive system didn't evolve for abundant, high-GI foods.?

High-fiber diet

To find solid evidence of what ancient Southwestern tribes actually ate, Reinhard turned to what he called "the most intimate residues from archaeological sites" ? fossilized poop. Known as coprolites, these fossils contain a record of their creator's most recent meals.

The researchers analyzed 25 coprolites from Antelope Cave in northwestern Arizona, a dwelling that was seasonally occupied for thousands of years. These particular coprolites (20 of which turned out to be human) date back to at least A.D. 1150 and earlier. The dates make the cave a perfect time to look at the transition from a total hunter-gatherer lifestyle to one supplemented by some agriculture, Reinhard said.

"It bridges two different dietary traditions, one which has been around for several thousands of years with one that was relatively newly introduced at the time the cave was occupied," he said.

The analysis revealed that these ancient people chowed down on flour made from maize and wild sunflower and other seeds, as well as on fibrous succulent plants such as yucca and prickly pear. This diet was higher fiber than anything modern people eat. The feces were three-quarters fiber by volume, Reinhard said, and these Native Americans were probably eating between 200 and 400 grams of the indigestible stuff per day. For comparison, the Institute of Medicine recommends 25 grams of fiber a day for the modern woman, and 38 grams for men. The average adult manages only about 15 grams. Modern agriculture has favored plants with less fiber, Reinhard said, so even the ancient tribes' maize would have been more fibrous than the corn we eat today.

"When I was a young researcher I tried to replicate this diet, and it was impossible," Reinhard said. "I was essentially eating all day to try to get this fiber."

Evolving diets

In addition, Reinhard and his colleagues reported in the August issue of the journal Current Anthropology, the Southwest Native American diet had a very low glycemic index. Prickly pear pads, a common staple, rate only a 7 on the 100-point GI scale. The highest-GI food these tribes would have had was maize, the researchers found, which would fall at about 57 on the scale ? just two points shy of qualifying as a "low-GI" food today. (Modern sweet corn on the cob has a GI of 60; processed foods like white rice and bagels are in the 90-95 range.)

In addition, prickly pear has a known blood-sugar-lowering effect, Reinhard said. Agave and yucca plants would have also had minimal effect on the blood sugar while providing yet more fiber. Rabbit, including bone fragments, was also found in the fecal fossils.

"The change we have undergone over generations has been toward less appreciation of really resistant foods and more toward what is called a 'Pablum' diet," Reinhard said. "It's kind of like going from chewing on pumpkin seeds to chewing on oatmeal."

The diet seen in the desert Southwest up to just 1,000 years ago is likely similar to what people ate the whole world over up until about 15,000 years ago, Reinhard said. And then humans invented agriculture, cultivating wheat, millet, rice and other grains.

"These plants, as they were cultivated, replaced the really, really ancient foods that everybody ate thousands and thousands of years ago with calorie-dense foods, or grains that could be turned into calorie-dense foods like grains, rice cakes, and, of course, alcoholic beverages," Reinhard said.
