10 Tips for Non-Profit Social Media Success | Business 2 Community

I had the pleasure of speaking at PodCamp East today. My talk was on ?Cultivating Zombies or Activating communities?. We covered quite a bit of ground, so, I thought I would highlight some of the tips we talked about in strategies for non-profits to consider when evaluating a social media presence.

Want to know more about the Zombies- don?t worry, I?ll cover that in the next post!

I will be putting up the complete slide share and additional notes and resources shortly! This might be a good time to sign up for my newsletter by email on the right, or download my mobile app this way you will get notified whenever something is posted !
20120930-011452.jpg

To those who came to the presentation today, thank you! It was amazing to have the opportunity to share ideas into changing the world by getting more people involved!

(Notice getting more followers and likes on Facebook is not on here ? that?s for the Zombie post! )

1. Start blogging OR create a blog type site:

This allows you to tell deeper stories, a critical aspect of building relationships

Also an important tool for reaching others who will be looking for your services online or looking for causes to support in their local area. If you?re not showing up when they try to find you, how will you get the support?

Blogging provides a platform for you to use as a home base. Anything you post elsewhere, can be brought onto your blog.

***Tip: If writing a blog is overwhelming and your primary social media activities will be focused on other platforms like Twitter, Instagram or YouTube, you can always get resourceful and use a service like Overblog to pull it all together for you and display it in a blog format. It is very easy to set up and a very interesting option for non-profits. It will also allow for you to write blog posts when the need arises or you are ready to start.

Blogs also allow you to address concerns or frequently asked questions that you encounter daily in the public eye. It serves as a resource not only to support your projects but to reassure people about things they would otherwise be concerned about, for example, allocation of funding ? how much of what they donate goes to helping ? just one small example that can help bring more donors in!

2. Activate a Twitter Account
Your Twitter account can be used to reach new people, identify others who you might be able to collaborate with and find influencers and supporters to help you in your cause.

You can also use Twitter to have brainstorming sessions with others who share similar interests, or promote events through hashtag chat.

3. Sign up for a social media helper tool like Commun.it or Nimble -both have free versions. These will help you manage communication with your community.

Nimble is neat because it pulls all your social accounts into one place ? in an ?email style? interface. For people trying to make sense of the flow of messages from social sites, it pulls it together so you can read and manage all in one place just like email. I also like the feature of creating follow up actions and scheduling events around your online contacts. It helps keep track of the relationships you are building and future plans and actions.

Commun.it shows engagement opportunities, reminds you to respond to ?mentions? and also monitors who us talking about you, and identifies potential new relationships to pursue. It?s very user friendly, definitely a tool to check out!

For documenting events that receive online attention, you can also check out Storify, I covered it in a previous post here.

4. Tell your story

The most important aspect of gaining support in a non profit using social media is getting people and organizations to connect with you so they feel that they want to support you. Take the time to dig into your ?raison d??tre? (reason of being) and share this. Make sure to always connect your story back to your community, your sponsors ? they need to understand why they should care and why supporting you is important to them. Draw the connections.

5. Start using video ? YouTube, Google hang outs, or and easy mobile app like Tout give lots of opportunities to share moments, conversations, presentations and brainstorming sessions.

6. Activate an email campaign ? like Mail Chimp. Email is still important. Use this instead of traditional direct mail. It will not only provide you with an easy way to keep in touch, it will provide stats on who has seen it, clicked through on your links, etc.

7. Get out into your community and let people know about all this in person!

You have to supplement online activity with real life contact and events. Find people who are interested in your cause, and then share your message. Plan talks or events to raise awareness. Let people know how they can stay in touch and help online!

8. Send a media release about what you?re doing ? whenever you have news, or something new to say ? contact the local media. People still watch tv and read newspapers. Don?t forget this as part of our strategy and direct them to your social sites for more information.

9. Use pictures ? people do not have a lot of time. Sharing photos is a quick easy way to communicate messages and feelings. Use photos to recognize partners, volunteers, show results of people?s contributions. A great way to give results to the community that supports you and to entertain and recognize them!

10. Follow other bloggers and organizations that provide content focusing on the same goals as yours ? fundraising and sharing the story of their missions ? these will be your teachers.

These are 10 quick tips to make sure you?re moving in the right direction. In my next post, I will include the slides. Stay tuned and thank you for a great event today!

What tricks or tips do you use to keep community engaged?

Are you cultivating zombies, or activating community?

Online Gaming Fun with Reel Cash Critters on Gamesville (Review)

I have a secret love of online games and love trying them out. One of the online places I love playing games is on Gamesville. They have such a huge variety of fun games that are free, so it has served as great entertainment for many years. When I was given the opportunity to review the new an improved Reel Cash Critters, I jumped at it an couldn't wait.
How do you play Reel Cash Critters? The concept of the game is actually quite simple an similar to how a slot machine. With the Gamesville Gold Account, I was set to play with 30,000 GVs, which is the currency used to play the game. You can use as little as 5 GV per game or as much as 1000 per game, depending on how many lines you want (1, 2, or 3) and how much you want to win. The more you bet, the more you can win. I'm one of those people who likes to go all out with betting, so I bet the maximum most of the time!
Yup, it is easy, but also fun! Once I got started, I quickly wasted away an hour and was so excited when I won 1000 GV at one time. I started chatting with some Gamesville members who were playing Reel Cash Critters. You can click on "See Pay Table" to see how much each of the symbols is worth. When you get 2 or more of an item, you win! Occasionally players win cash prizes an one of the girls I was chatting with won $5 today! Someone else told me about the Battle games in which players can win much more GVs and/or cash money. Of course I had to see what the battle was all about, so I joined in. I won 12,000 GVs, which was about how much I had lost earlier in the day! I can't wait to try out the cash battle tonight, too.
I have to admit I was worried the game would be plastered with little kids, but you have to be 18+ to play Reel Cash Critters! This is a definite plus and I was able to actually have a good chat with the other members, mostly women my age and older. We had so much fun chatting and playing the game. They were also more than happy to give me game tips and encouraged me to keep trying. It's so awesome when you find a community like that to join and I cannot wait to sign on and play again later!

Join Today!

Want to give Gamesville and Reel Cash Critters a try? Use the Mom Spark Link to register and get 10,000 FREE GVs! Be sure to Follow Gamesville on Twitter and "Like" Gamesville on Facebook to keep up with all the latest games, sweepstakes and announcements! This review was made possible by?Mom?Spark?Media. Thoughts are my own.?I received a Gamesville Gold Membership and compensation for my time investment and work on this campaign.

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in SF

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Nobel Peace Laureate and Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was in San Francisco, where she received an honorary doctorate from the University of San Francisco during her landmark visit to the U.S.

Most of the nearly 5,000 seats at the university's War Memorial Gymnasium were filled Saturday morning as Suu Kyi was presented with the framed degree by House Minority Leader and San Francisco Democrat Nancy Pelosi, and given a key to the city by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.

Suu Kyi spoke to the crowd in English for several minutes before switching to Burmese. She also answered written questions from the audience.

While she spoke she urged factions in the Southeast Asian nation, also known as Burma, to consider what they have or haven't done to promote peace.

Suu Kyi's appearance at the university is part of her high-profile visit to the U.S. that has included a private meeting with President Barack Obama and standing ovations at awards ceremonies in Washington and New York, including at the United Nations.

"USF is honored to serve as the home for this event working in partnership with the San Francisco Bay Area Burmese community to shine a ray of light on Burma at this pivotal moment in its history," said USF President Stephen Privett.

Suu Kyi, 67, has been a key player in Myanmar's political transformation after a half-century of military rule.

Until November of 2010 she had spent about 15 years under house arrest during the former military regime. Now she heads the main opposition group with 43 seats in parliament, which is dominated by allies of the former regime.

Still, her presence in parliament is huge step toward democracy. She has also been named head of a 15-member parliamentary committee tasked with helping to implement rule of law in the country. Her party had boycotted the November 2010 elections but took part in by-elections in April.

Bomb kills 2 police near Afghan training academy

(AP) ? Afghan authorities say a roadside bomb has killed two policemen in Herat province of western Afghanistan, just hours before a ceremony to hand a nearby police training academy over from NATO to Afghan control.

Raouf Ahmedi, a spokesman for the Afghan police commander for the western region, says one of the policemen killed in Saturday's explosion was a teacher at the academy in Adraskan district. He says two other policemen were injured by the remote-controlled bomb that exploded as their vehicle passed.

Last week, a bomb in a parked motorcycle exploded outside the training center, killing two security guards.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the latest attack, but it matched the pattern of Taliban strikes that typically target Afghan forces and government workers.

Former Apple, NASA Engineers Make $11,111 Coffee Maker

A group of engineers who previously worked at Apple and NASA created an $11,111 coffee maker that measures the liquid?s heat as it brews to maintain the ?perfect? temperature.

Blossom Coffee company is the brainchild of coffee fan, Jeremy Kuempel, and two colleagues. Kuempel is an MIT engineering graduate who previously worked on Apple?s iPad and at electric-car maker Tesla.

The company debuted its first luxury product at Tech Crunch?s Disrupt Conference earlier this month and is taking pre-orders for about 10 of the Blossom One Limited, which are intended for commercial use and will be available in the spring, the company said.

The Blossom One Limited is about the size of a traditional desktop computer, measuring 7 inches wide. So far, restaurants, cafes and private individuals have inquired about owning one.

When asked if he?s a coffee drinker, Kuempel answered, ?I?m obsessed with it.?

The company wanted to keep coffee as ?front and center? as possible, so the machine?s design only allowed the coffee to touch glass and steel, which are inert materials that won?t react with it.

Posted Image

?We started with the coffee and designed around it,? Kuempel said.

It also has Wi-Fi capability and a camera for a QR scanner.

Kuempel said the company is working with high-end coffee bean providers to one day allow users to scan a QR code on the coffee bag. That way, the coffee maker will know exactly what type of coffee it is and how to brew it.

Android owners minimize cellular data usage in response to new shared data plans

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If history is a guide, Democrat Barack Obama will have a tough time in the first presidential debate on Wednesday, Republican Mitt Romney will be particularly aggressive, and both will risk committing a damaging gaffe if they wander off their talking points. The 90-minute showdown in Denver - the first of three televised Obama-Romney encounters in October that will set the tone for the final month of the presidential campaign - will feature two experienced and competent debaters who are at their best in scripted settings. ...

FDA Approves Colorectal Cancer Treatment | Science Business

By Alan, on September 28th, 2012

Stivarga bottle (Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals)

Stivarga bottle (Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug regorafenib to treat patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, where the cancer has progressed after treatment and spread to other parts of the body. Regorafenib is marketed under the brand name Stivarga by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, in Wayne, New Jersey.

Stivarga blocks several enzymes that promote cancer growth. The drug was evaluated in a clinical study of 760 patients with previously treated metastatic colorectal cancer. Patients were randomly assigned to receive Stivarga or placebo in addition to best supportive care, which includes treatments to help manage side effects and symptoms of cancer. Patients received treatment until their cancers progressed or side effects became unacceptable.

The trial demonstrated improvement in overall survival and progression-free survival for those receiving Stivarga compared to those receiving the placebo in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer whose disease had progressed after approved standard therapies. Median overall survival was 6.4 months with Stivarga versus 5.0 months with placebo. Median progression-free survival was 2.0 months with Stivarga versus 1.7 months with placebo.

FDA approved Stivarga with a boxed warning noting that severe and fatal liver toxicity occurred in patients treated with Stivarga during the clinical studies. The most common side effects reported in patients treated with Stivarga are weakness or fatigue, loss of appetite, hand-foot syndrome (sometimes associated with chemotherapy), diarrhea, mouth sores (mucositis), weight loss, infection, high blood pressure, and changes in voice volume or quality (dysphonia).

FDA says it cleared Stivarga after an expedited six-month review in a program for major advances in treatment or those that provide treatment when no adequate therapy exists. The agency says the review was completed one month ahead of the scheduled product?s prescription drug user fee goal date of 27 October 2012.

F Is For ?Fat? ? Childhood ObesityYour Health Journal | Your Health ...

From The Battle Creek Examiner?..

It?s been an alarming few days of obesity-related news. First, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released the results of its ?F as in Fat? report, projecting that half of U.S. adults will be obese by 2030 unless Americans make drastic dietary changes.

The New York Times reported, according to data published by the University of Illinois at Chicago, white people lacking a high school diploma are experiencing sharp drops in life expectancy. There are many possible reasons, but the skyrocketing rate of obesity is a known suspect.

Tuesday marked the release of the most recent report from Mission: Readiness, an organization of about 300 retired generals, admirals and senior civilian military leaders who are trying to spread the word that obesity, and specifically childhood obesity, is nothing short of a dire national security risk.

?Still Too Fat to Fight,? the follow-up to a similarly titled report from 2010, takes on one of my pet peeves: cheap junk foods that are readily available in our schools. According to Mission: Readiness, students in the U.S. consume almost 400 billion calories from junk food sold at schools each year.

This will come as no surprise to anyone who has spent time in high schools ? especially those in lower-income communities ? where students turn down free or reduced-price breakfasts or lunches in favor of sacks of salty snacks and high-sugar beverages.

The report features some cringe-worthy statistics: One in four young adults is unable to serve in the military because of excess body fat, and many of the ones who do to enlist are at high risk of injury. The military?s health insurance system, according to Mission: Readiness, spends ?well over $1 billion a year on treating weight-related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease? in addition to musculoskeletal injuries resulting from inadequate physical fitness and low levels of bone density that may be related to the plunge in dairy intake and a corresponding rise in consumption of sugary drinks over the past 35 years.

99% Finding Nemo 3D

All Critics (220) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (230) | Rotten (2) | DVD (48)

A genuinely funny and touching film that, in less than a decade, has established itself as a timeless classic.

It makes even more compelling what is still my all-time favorite Pixar film.

Think of this re-release as an encore, a handy touchstone for you and your kids. "Finding Nemo" was and remains the gold standard against which all other modern animated films are measured, a classic from the day it premiered.

In this seamless blending of technical brilliance and storytelling verve, the Pixar team has made something as marvelously soulful and innately, fluidly American as jazz.

Nemo, with its ravishing underwater fantasia, manages to trump the design glamour of earlier Pixar films.

The 3D gives the images a little more depth but they already had heft and weight. The 3D is a money-making gimmick, nothing more.

A great blend of storytelling and technology.

It's downright curmudgeonly to remain focused on the negatives when the rest of the picture is saturated with invention and wit.

It's bright, it's beautiful and it hasn't aged a day. So why, then, do we need to see it in 3-D?

A rare example of a movie that not only survives its 3-D conversion but benefits from it

It was as funny as I remember and brilliant because it is subtle. It just knocks it out of the park. I love everything about this movie, one of my favorite Pixar movies of all time, 5/5 Schmoes. The new sound/3D adds to the greatness that is Nemo.

If you're fishing for fun in an ocean of movie mediocrity, grab the kids or the grandkids, fork out a few extra bucks and see this one in three-dimensions.

It's a great movie, so much fun, an acheivement that should be enjoyed by children of all ages and worth seeing it in 3D.

Sea-worthy w/enhanced visual lure and rich, humorous characters set in a double narrative; this 3D revisit allows us to fall overboard all over again.

If ever there was a film that wasn't broke, this is it. So naturally they converted it into 3D for a special re-release this weekend. (Stupid irony.)

I believe my sensitivity to certain creative choices of the picture has dulled some, while age has opened my eyes to its complex relationships and tireless sense of exploration.

When the blunt head of Bruce the shark slams into the screen like a hammer, everyone -- adults included -- gasps

At its best, the added dimension is merely harmless, making the movie blurry enough that you need special glasses to make it sharp again.

[VIDEO ESSAY] Disney/Pixar's 3D upgrade of its classic animated children's movie - using the expensive Xpand 3D format - has the duel effect of darkening the film's vibrant colors while adding considerable depth to the screen.

If the Pixar vault was on fire and they could only save one film, it'd be this eminently re-watchable modern fairy tale...Looks all the more stunning with this state-of-the-art 3D retro-fit.

Farrelly Brothers Still Working on Dumb and Dumber To

The Dumb and Dumber sequel is titled Dumb and Dumber To

For a while it looked like Dumb and Dumber 2 might not be happening after all, following Jim Carrey saying that he stepped away from the sequel. Co-star Jeff Daniels later clarified that the project is indeed coming together slower than Carrey had hoped for, but that the Farrelly Brothers are still intent on making the film?(with Carrey)?as soon as next year.

Bobby Farrelly lent further credence to that claim last month, while discussing the setup for the comedic followup to his and brother Pete Farrelly?s beloved lowbrow comedy. Now, both siblings have confirmed that the sequel will indeed be titled Dumb and Dumber To, as long rumored.

The Farrellys made the ?announcement? via Twitter, telling their followers ?You also might be interested to know that we are almost done with the Dumb and Dumber To (sic) script. [We] think you?re going to like it.? However, the siblings refrained from spilling the beans on any other details ? such as whether either Harry or Lloyd will be married in the sequel ? other than to offer assurances that ?they?re the same old guys? from the first film.

For our money: Dumb and Dumber To is an amusing title, but we were pulling for the sequel to be called Dumb and Dumber Too instead, since it would?ve worked as a funny, intentional, misuse of grammar ? a reference to this technically being the third installment ? after the woebegone prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (which the Farrellys were not responsible for) ? and even a?nod to how this followup will be arriving some two decades after the original.

On the other hand, at least the title pun is more appropriate here than with Star Trek Into Darkness, right? Moving on?

Farrelly Brothers Dumb and Dumber Sequel

The quality of the Farellys? movie output has been mixed since their ?crowning achievement? There?s Something About Mary back in 1998 ? as evidenced by the varying reactions to raunchy comedies like Shallow Hal, The Heartbreak Kid, Hall Pass, and this year?s tamer offering,?Three Stooges. It?s for that reason that many fans of the original D&Der?are interested in Dumb and Dumber To, and remain cautiously optimistic about how it will turn out.

Carrey?s star has likewise been traveling a rough road over the past decade, but stands to be rejuvenated by his role as?Colonel Stars in next year?s Kick-Ass 2. Daniels, meanwhile, has been doing well thanks to an ongoing role in?Aaron Sorkin?s The Newsroom?and featured roles in movies like this week?s Looper. Hence, the two are actually in decent shape to return to their Dumb and Dumber roles ? and attempt to recapture ?the magic? ? so many years after the fact.

More on Dumb and Dumber To as the story develops.

Iranian president's last hurrah in New York

DUBAI (Reuters) - He is loathed in the West and weakened at home, but Iran's outspoken president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad seems intent on raising hackles one more time during his last official visit to the United Nations this week.

With tensions between Tehran and Western powers high due to the dispute over Iran's nuclear program, his latest blasts against Israel show that the hardline Ahmadinejad has no thoughts of presenting a kinder, gentler face to the world at a delicate moment.

But the 56-year-old - who is struggling through his last year in office after nearly losing his job - has long relished any opportunity to promote his controversial views and to bat back criticism of them.

"Now he's been sidelined at home he will really want to ham it up abroad," said Ali Ansari of Scotland's St Andrew's University, referring to Ahmadinejad's address to the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday.

Unfazed by walkouts and demonstrations on previous visits to New York, Ahmadinejad has alleged the U.S. government was behind the 9/11 attacks, lambasted Western leaders for being played by "deceitful Zionists", and denied homosexuality exists in Iran.

In contrast to the rhetoric, he has happily engaged with U.S. media, appearing on television and in newspaper interviews.

"There's a lot of ego that drives the blacksmith's son from Iran to take on the might of American television," said Iranian-American author Hooman Majd, who has met him several times.

Since his election victory in 2005, the diminutive president has gone from obscurity to the most visible actor on the Iranian stage. He even survived a disputed re-election in 2009 that rocked the country to its core.

Mocked by progressive Iranians and blamed for severe mismanagement, Ahmadinejad has still created a cult following among some people through his charm, simple lifestyle and populist beliefs.

His fans glorify him as a humble servant who shuns the trappings of power. Ahmadinejad, so the story goes, took office refusing a salary and going to work with a packed lunch.

But such modesty does not extend to his fiery character which lies at the heart of his quest for global recognition.

"He's the first president in Iran that almost everyone in the world knows. That gives him huge satisfaction," Majd said.

Ansari said he was driven by vanity and the need for attention.

"He also believes he speaks the truth and that everyone in the West simply needs to be enlightened," he said.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's most powerful man, initially groomed Ahmadinejad to take on the reformist movement through his devout religious views, his common touch, his accessibility to young Iranians and connections to the military.

One of the attractions for his supporters was his non-clerical status and a down-to-earth image that contrasted with the elite members of the clergy.

Seven years on the political terrain has changed.

Reformists have been sidelined, opposition leaders Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi are under house arrest, and parliament is compliant, leaving Khamenei in control of all levers of power.

"Ahmadinejad's role was to dismantle the institutions of republicanism in the country, and having gone some way to achieving this, his utility is now over," Ansari said.

Despite his debt to Khamenei, Ahmadinejad's quest for power led him into confrontation with the supreme leader. The feud went public last year after Khamenei reinstated intelligence minister Heydar Moslehi, who Ahmadinejad had sacked.

Khamenei loyalists launched a campaign to undermine the president who has since been frozen out of major decision-making and threatened with impeachment.

"He wants to leaves a legacy where he was the guy breaking the stranglehold of the mullahs," Majd said. "He believes an elected president should be allowed to govern. That's quite a popular sentiment among Iranians."

IT'S THE ECONOMY

Economic problems have also piled up.

Ahmadinejad faces an economy ravaged by sanctions, a plummeting rial and inflation that officially stands at 25 percent but which some estimate is closer to 50 percent.

Many criticize him for launching a program in 2010 to withdraw generous subsidies in favor of cash handouts. Food and fuel prices have soared and households have struggled to cope.

Such was the concern over his performance that in March he was summoned by the parliament for a roasting.

Abroad the Ahmadinejad years have been equally disastrous, putting the country under huge pressure, analysts say.

Confrontation with Israel has intensified and Tehran is one of the few international backers of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad in the conflict there.

"Unfortunately during the Ahmadinejad era the foreign policy of Iran has been damaged, with the West but also with regional countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the Gulf countries," said Hossein Mousavian, a former nuclear negotiator under President Mohammad Khatami and now a visiting scholar at Princeton University.

The next president needs the Supreme Leader's trust because legally Khamenei is the ultimate decision-maker on major foreign policy and security issues, Mousavian explained.

"It's been an incendiary, combative approach," Majd said. "There's a lot of dissatisfaction as to where the country is going."

Iran restarted uranium enrichment weeks after Ahmadinejad took office in 2005, activities that had been suspended under Khatami. Washington has hinted at military action over what it believes are attempts to develop a weapons capability.

As rhetoric flies back and forth between Israel and Iran, Ahmadinejad misses no opportunity to bash Israel as a "cancerous tumor" and the United States as the world's leading war-monger.

Yet his time in office is notable for his attempts to establish direct contact with two U.S. presidents.

"The most important legacy left during the Ahmadinejad presidency was that the taboo of negotiating with the United States was broken. Since he had a freer hand, he wrote letters to both President Bush and President Obama," Mousavian said.

"Even though his letters went unanswered, it was unprecedented for any Iranian president since the (1979) revolution to make such overtures to the United States."

The direct approaches include meetings between Ahmadinejad advisors and U.S. officials during his first term.

His determination to break the deadlock also led Ahmadinejad to advocate a 2009 nuclear deal that came close to resolving the issue. Ultimately it was shelved after criticism from both conservatives and reformists.

Having served two terms and unable to run again, he says he intends to return to his university post next year. But many believe he cannot resist the temptation to carve a future role in Iranian politics.

"He has a huge ego. He believes he's right and he is unafraid," said Majd, who believes Ahmadinejad may be mulling setting up a political party.

"He's like a boxer who's been knocked down. When you think it's over, he always seems to get up again."

9 climbers killed, 6 missing in Nepal avalanche

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? An avalanche hit climbers on a high Himalayan peak in Nepal on Sunday, leaving at least nine dead and six others missing, officials said. Many of the climbers were French or German.

Police official Basanta Bahadur Kuwar said the bodies of a Nepalese guide and a German man were recovered and that rescue pilots had spotted seven other bodies on the slopes of Mount Manaslu in northern Nepal, the eighth highest mountain in the world.

In Madrid, Spain's Foreign Ministry said one of those killed was Spanish, but did not release the person's identity.

The identities of the other victims were still being confirmed.

Ten other climbers survived the avalanche but many were injured and were flown to hospitals by rescue helicopters, Kuwar said.

Rescue pilot Pasang, who uses only one name, said three injured French citizens and two Germans had been transported to hospitals in Katmandu.

He said rescuers were also attempting to bring the bodies of the dead back to the base camp.

Weather conditions were deteriorating and it was not possible to continue air searches of the mountain Sunday afternoon, Kuwar said.

The avalanche hit the climbers at a camp at 7,000 meters (22,960 feet) early in the morning as they were preparing to head toward the summit, which is 8,156 meters (26,760 feet) high.

There were Italian, German and French teams on the mountain, with a total of 231 climbers and guides, but not all were at the higher camps, officials said.

It is currently the beginning of Nepal's autumn mountaineering season. The autumn season comes right after the end of the monsoon rains, which make weather conditions unpredictable, and is not as popular among mountaineers as the spring season, when hundreds of climbers crowd the high Himalayan peaks.

Nepal has eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world. Climbers have complained in recent years that climbing conditions have deteriorated and risks of accidents have increased.

Veteran mountain guide Apa, who has climbed Mount Everest a record 21 times, traveled for months across Nepal earlier this year campaigning about the effects of global warming on the mountain peaks.

He told The Associated Press the mountains now have considerably less ice and snow, making it harder for climbers to use ice axes and crampons on their boots to get a grip on the slopes.

Loose snow also increases the risk of avalanches.

Officials were investigating the cause of Sunday's avalanche.

6 Steps to a Great Website in the Real Estate Market | Business 2 ...

buildingFirst of all, hold on. Don?t stop reading if you have nothing to do with real estate! Even though the following advice is kind of specific, you can still adapt it to any other market and have a great website too. Now, let?s get down to business.

Real estate is one of the more profitable markets ?offline? for people who have been in it for a number of years and have some veteran experience. However, the internet being quite a new thing creates some difficulties even for the most experienced agents.

That?s why I?m creating this guide. I want to show you a cheap and easy to grasp way of launching a great website without having to hire a professional developer.

Who are you?

Essentially, it doesn?t matter if you?re an agency, or a lone broker trying to make a living. The general traits of a great website remain the same ? although they may require small tweaks here and there depending on the scale of your business.

Step #1: Taking care of the technical stuff

There are three things I want to explain really quickly here: domain, hosting, and WordPress.

As a broker you?re surely doing your business in a specific area. When it comes to the domain name, it?s best if you choose something along the lines of: ?losangelesrealestate.com,? ?torontorealestate.com,? and so on. Of course, neither of these is currently available (they?re just examples), but I?m sure you get the point.

By indicating the area in which you do your business right in the domain name, you?re making it a lot easier for your prospective clients to find you on Google.

When it comes to hosting, there?s only one main rule. Please don?t sign up for a free hosting account. Such platforms are NEVER any good, and you?ll simply end up with a thousand ads displayed on your site without your permission. Hosting isn?t really expensive, you can get it for $5 a month. Try companies such as Host Gator, or Site5.

Finally, we?ve come to WordPress. This is the cheapest (actually it?s free) and the best website management platform available.

It?s very easy to use, so you don?t need any serious computer skills, and it provides all the features you would require. Also, you can extend its possibilities by installing some free plugins (thousands of them available).

(Your web host will most likely take care of installing WordPress on your domain for free.)

Step #2: Use a quality theme

When new visitors come to your site, you have no more than 4 seconds to make a lasting impression. At this point, they will already know if they want to do business with you or not.

I know this is unfair, but it?s just the way it is. Therefore, it?s your job to make the best first impression possible. That?s why a really nice theme for your WordPress site will come handy here.

Unfortunately, there isn?t that much quality stuff for the real estate market online. One theme I can recommend is HomeQuest (not an affiliate link) by ThemeFuse. You can get it for $99.

This might sound expensive, but it?s actually a real bargain comparing to the amount you?d have to pay a professional designer to create a custom theme for you from the ground up.

Step #3: Create quality content

?Quality content? sounds a bit vague, so let me explain it in a little more detail.

First of all, you have to know who you are talking to (know your audience). Depending on the type of the client you want to attract, you?ll have to share different content.

For instance, first time home buyers will search for specific advice, rather than some speculative thoughts and predictions. Also, if someone lives in Texas, they will probably be more interested in Fort Worth real estate than in Beverly Hills real estate.

This all sounds basic, but new website owners often overlook these details and end up catering to the wrong audience.

Once you have your target audience set you can start planning your content.

There?s a really big spectrum of things to share, but here are some ideas you can build upon:

  • advice on how to find deals in the area,
  • list of deals in the area,
  • advice on what creates a good deal,
  • differences between various types of real estate from a legal perspective,
  • how to get effective financing,
  • how to recognize a bad neighborhood, and more.

The main advice here is to make your site content-driven. Always focus on the reason why the visitors would want to come to your site, and not on what to sell them. If you figure this out, you?ll have a successful website in the real estate market.

Step #4: Make it personal

The main difference between quality websites and poor websites is that the former talk to the visitors directly and make their message personal.

A couple of guidelines you can follow when creating your content:

  • Speak to the visitor directly. Use the word ?you? a lot.
  • Don?t be anonymous, show your face and display your real name wherever possible.
  • Don?t try to sound smart. Create your content to use a voice you?d use when speaking to your visitor in person.
  • Don?t ever write about yourself using the word ?we.?

The idea here is to create a connection, not to a barrier separating you (your business) from your visitors/clients.

Step #5: Create an email newsletter

This is a method people don?t usually use when they first launch their sites, despite the fact that it does work brilliantly in every market.

The idea is to get people to revisit your site whenever something interesting is going on. So if you convince your audience to join your email newsletter you will be able to send them direct email messages containing some unique advice or deals whenever you want.

Later on, you can also use this method to promote your own offers.

The only difficulty is to get people on board and convince them to sign up. The internet-wide method of doing this is to offer some kind of a bonus.

You could, say, create a Word document titled ?X Things to Do Before Buying Your First House? (or something similar), save it as PDF and then offer it as a gift in exchange for signing up.

You can get all the technical stuff done in MailChimp, for example. This is a great and free (for small lists) email marketing tool.

Step #6: Getting your audience ready to buy

This can be tricky, so it?s important that you understand exactly what I mean here.

The point in this step is not to make big money, it?s just to get your audience accustomed to some kind of offers and spending just a little money.

That way, you?ll find it much more natural to offer bigger deals and market to people directly later on. If you?ve never offered anything and then right out of the blue you?re sharing big real estate deals, people will find it a bit surprising.

The easiest approach here is to go to Amazon, search for publications on the real estate market and offer it through the Amazon Associates program.

That?s it for my list. Feel free to comment and let me know what?s your experience with websites in the real estate market. Are you a real estate agent planning to launch a website?
