Voice assistant 'Nina' lets any app obey commands, makes speech your password

Voice recognition technology from Nuance is all over the place -- in everything from Smart TVs to Beemers. But today, in response to the growth of device-specific voice assistants like Siri and S-Voice, the company wants to take things down a different route: launching a mobile SDK for iOS and Android that any third-party app can employ. Baptized "Nina," the voice assistant won't only be able to understand instructions, but will also identify the speaker using vocal biometrics. That means Nina could potentially pay a bill, arrange a bank transfer, book a vacation or even interact with government services without ever requiring you to enter a password. The video after the break shows just how intimate things could get -- assuming you're able to find a spot where the two of you won't be overheard.

Warick grad Wenger leads Impact past Union, 2-0

MONTREAL?Andrew Wenger headed in a goal just before halftime and Felipe Martins added another for the Montreal Impact in a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union.

Wenger, the top pick in the SuperDraft, got the start because designated player Marco Di Vaio was in Italy, where a prosecutor has called for the former Bologna star to be suspended one year for failing to report alleged match fixing in a scandal that has shaken Italian soccer.

The 21-year-old Wenger looked ready to take up the challenge, leaping into the air to head in a goal on a set play off a corner kick just before half time.

"I don't think the replacing Di Vaio thing is much of a story," Wenger said after his fourth goal in 14 MLS games. "I've played out there by myself before.

"It's another game where, as a rookie, I'm trying to prove I can play in this league and keep progressing."

Martins struck in the 79th minute, thrusting forward to head in Hassoun Camara's cross.

Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and the team got its first clean sheet since a 2-0 win at Kansas City on May 5, and only its third of the season.

"The good thing is we didn't allow a goal, that's the first step," said defender Matteo Ferrari. "But I think we didn't do well as a team."

The Impact (9-13-3), who are 8-3-2 at home, moved past the Columbus Crew into sixth place in the Eastern Conference and opened a seven-point lead on eighth-place Philadelphia (7-11-2). However, both of those rivals hold five games in hand on Montreal.

The Impact may get more bad news this week as central defender Nelson Rivas was sent off along with Union forward Jack McInerney in the 69th minute after a shoving match, leaving both clubs with 10 men to finish the game.

Replays showed Rivas head-butting the Philadelphia player, so he may get more than the automatic one-game suspension for a red card, although there was embellishment on both sides of the melee.

"One's a head butt and one's a very innocent push," Union coach John Hackworth said. "I can't for the life of me figure out how we're not up a man for the last 22 minutes.

"It's unfathomable to me. I looked at the video. Jack doesn't even really push him."

The Impact's win avenged a 2-1 loss in Philadelphia on July 14 on Carlos Valdes' goal in stoppage time. It was Montreal's second victory in a row after a 3-1 decision over New York a week earlier.

The Union missed two prime chances in the first half as Lionard Pajoy hit a post and Jack McInerney was stopped from in close off a corner kick.

"Those two missed chances came back to haunt us," Hackworth said. "Then we opened the second half and have a great combination play through the middle and miss another one.

"If you don't (score) you can't win."

NOTES: Di Vaio, who faces a one-year ban for failing to report match-fixing while with Serie-A club Bologna, is to return to Montreal on Sunday. A decision in his case is expected next week. ... The Union's new acquisition, Malian defender Bakary Soumare, was expected to make his debut but wasn't even in the 18-man lineup.

Business Plan Small: Writing a Small Business Plan - Writer

Writing a small business plan is beneficial for any business of any nature. But the business plan serves beyond just being a presentation face to an external party. For any company to be successful, it must boast of satisfied customers, and this can be achieved by having good company policies that point the directions that the general operations will take as the business runs. To have satisfied customers, the company must have a solid customer service that will serve as the contact point for the customers to the business. Therefore, by writing a plan for a small business, the entrepreneur is one step closer to enhancing their customers' experiences.

Customer services are of two natures, external and internal. External customer services usually involve marketing strategies that will be used to woo the potential customer to the business. Internal customer services usually involve applying strategies that will ensure customer loyalty is developed and more customers stay. By writing a small business plan, these two customer service aspects are defined and each is solved accordingly.

To enhance customer experience, the internal customer service must be of great quality. The most effective way to do this is by establishing a solid first contact resolution. The first encounter with the customer care agent should be pleasant enough to build the customer's confidence with the company. For this to happen, the company's background mechanisms should be running smoothly. The company's components should co-exist, and the task force should work as one entity towards finding solutions. The task force should work as a team regardless of which departments they interact with. This means that there should be an open communication amongst all members of the team.

Without these two aspects, finding solutions for the customers will be almost impossible and of poor quality. Communication and teamwork are usually defined by the business policies placed to direct the business. These policies will be made more definite by writing a small business plan for the enterprise. With the help of a reputable business writing service, thdse policies will be modeled towards successful running of the business.

It is also important to manage customer experience. A customer is more willing to wait for a particular service if their faith in the company is high. By writing a small business plan, the entrepreneur has the opportunity to establish policies that will ensure that there are few complaints and repeat contacts from customers. The operation plan should ensure that the goods or services are delivered as expected, and any query is handled as soon as possible. Writing a small business plan will also ensure that the management sector is as efficient as possible. This will ensure that the right people are delegated for the right tasks, and those involved with customer service are trained so as to manage contact with customers. A reputable business plan writing service provider will always point out that efficiency in management will always reflect through the satisfaction levels of the customers, and eventually, the sales made.

Small business social media case studies

With 60% of companies using Twitter and 95% using Facebook, social media has been embraced by businesses around the globe, mostly by large businesses and the big marketing giants, but some small businesses have also benefited from them, especially when it comes to brand recognition, although with 76% of them NOT FINDING SOCIAL MEDIA USEFUL, they are still a minority. However, Facebook has tried to boost small businesses allowing free ads.. so this has helped a few small businesses to notice a boost in their branding (also thanks to linkedin or Twitter).

socialmedialite

Here are some examples of small businesses that have benefited from social media:

Kogi BBQ

With the use of twitter this Korean BBQ trust roams Los Angeles city selling tacos. They use twitter to inform about their truck?s next stop, or what part of the city they?ll be visiting next. Right now they have over 45,000 twitter fans and they even had a crowdsourced T-shirt competition where their twitter fans could choose their favourite T-shirt design.

TENDER

This women clothes store with luxury clothes designed by top designers (Birmingham, Michigan) got a great boost in sales by offering their private-label Tender tights at $15 via Twitter. They sold out in no time.

Marination Mobile

This taco selling business in Seattle used to sell its tacos on different trucks, but right now thanks to its 10,000 followers between Facebook and Twitter it?s opened its second brick-and-mortar restaurant. How has social media helped them, you might ask. well, they?re not the only business selling $2.25 tacos, but they are one of the very few businesses selling $2.25 tacos whose small mobile business has managed to get two static restaurants.

Animal General Hospital

This animal hospital was really boosted when they decided to drop the yellow pages (where they?d invested a fortune) and embrace Facebook and Youtube. Within a year and a half they had 250 new clients, greatly due to the interaction social media allows and static publicity doesn?t allow.

Mary Anna?s Summer Sweet Tea

This small business in New Jersey is another great example of business blooming thanks to Twitter, which they use to tell their followers about all kinds of offers, and to sell their products online.

So, overall it?s highly advisable for you to go on Social media if you have a small business and want it to improve. For more information about how social media can help small businesses please check this post.

PFT: Football should be in Olympics, Goodell says

Tom BradyAP

Tom Brady turns 35 today.

And while it?s hard to imagine what to get the man who has everything (lingerie model wife, beautiful kids, Super Bowl rings, great hair), the Patriots are still in awe of the fact Brady?s pushing the same way he did at 25.

In fact, when things aren?t just right in practice, he still gets angry at the smallest missteps, showing a side few see from the seemingly always cool Brady.

?He?s his biggest critic,? wide receiver Wes Welker told Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald. ?As much as coach stays on him and everything else, he?s his own worst enemy sometimes when it comes to that

?It?s great to see. He cares, and he wants to be great, and he is great. That?s probably why.?

Part of the reason Brady?s great is his attention to small details. He used to work on technique each offseason, but with the death of his mentor Tom Martinez, he sought out former major league pitcher Tom House, who has also worked with Drew Brees and Tim Tebow on campus at Southern Cal.

??He was really good showing up here on campus at USC. But these guys, guys like Tom, there?s one common denominator. They?re always trying to get better,? House said. ?The one thing with the superstars that I?ve been blessed to be around, they?re all trying to get better every day. That?s why they?re at the level they?re at because of that commitment to excellence.

?There?s not much we?ve done with Tom. But it?s that 1-2 percent that he?s looking to get better with that makes him special.?

House said Brady was an ?information seeker,? looking specifically for any small mechanical issue that might hold him back, whether it was the position of his left arm, or how he opens his front side when he throws.

Of course, that doesn?t mean he?s perfect (despite appearances). He had what was described as his worst day of camp, throwing an interception and ?several errant balls.? That led to what Welker described as showing his ?human? side, something not too many people see.

The fact he?s so meticulous isn?t the only reason he?s so good, but the attention to fine detail is easy to overlook.

And with the fascination we often have with lesser quarterbacks, it?s good to know Brady doesn?t take things for granted the way the viewing public often does with him.

House GOP Accuses White House Of Playing Politics With Defense Layoffs, Demands Documents

WASHINGTON -- Escalating a small drama that's becoming increasingly politicized, House Republicans have asked the Labor Department to turn over documents related to the agency's recommendation that defense contractors refrain from issuing layoff notices due to looming defense budget cuts ahead of the fall elections.

The job losses, expected due to sequestration, could become a campaign issue for President Barack Obama and other politicians on both sides of the aisle, as layoff notices could go out to workers shortly before voters head to the polls in November.

As AOL Defense has reported, earlier this week the Labor Department sent out guidance to contractors saying the layoff notices wouldn't need to go out 60 days ahead of sequestration, as many expected they would under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. Republicans, such as House Armed Services Committee Chairman Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), claimed the guidance was "politically motivated" and legally dubious, suggesting the White House simply wanted to avoid a politically damaging situation in an election that's all about jobs.

On Thursday, House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline (R-Minn.) sent a letter to Labor Secretary Hilda Solis asking that the agency turn over all of its internal correspondence related to its guidance to contractors on the WARN Act.

"The recent 'guidance' issued by the Obama administration is a political document that underscores the legal uncertainty facing employers and leaves countless workers in the dark about whether they will lose their jobs," Kline said in a statement. "The president can end the debate over the WARN Act right now by providing real transparency to the sequestration process and working with Congress on responsible reforms that will help fix the nation?s debt crisis."

In its guidance, the Labor Department essentially said that the layoff notices wouldn?t need to be issued since it isn't clear whether sequestration will actually happen. Lawmakers, in theory, still have time to avoid the sequestration cuts if they can reach a compromise.

The layoffs would be the result of the debt deal hammered out between the White House and Congress last year. The campaign for GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has tried to make an issue out of the looming defense layoffs, particularly in Virginia, a crucial swing state with a large number of defense jobs.
