James Bond's 50th anniversary celebrated at Oscars

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Oscar won't be the only chiseled man in the spotlight at the 85th Academy Awards.
Telecast producers say the show will also feature a celebration of Bond, James Bond.
Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced Friday that the show will pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise, which they describe as "the longest-running motion picture franchise in history and a beloved global phenomenon."
The most recent Bond film, "Skyfall," was released in November and has made more than $1 billion worldwide ? a franchise record.
Nominations for this year's Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 10. The Oscars will be presented Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Pakistani girl shot by Taliban leaves British hospital
LONDON (Reuters) - A Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls' education has been discharged from a British hospital after doctors said she was well enough to spend time recovering with her family.
Fifteen-year-old Malala Yousufzai, who was shot by the Taliban in October and brought to Britain for treatment, was discharged on Thursday but is due to be re-admitted in late January or early February for reconstructive surgery to her skull, doctors said.
The shooting of Yousufzai, in the head at point blank range as she left school in the Swat valley, drew widespread international condemnation.
She has become a an internationally recognized symbol of resistance to the Taliban's efforts to deny women education and other rights, and more than 250,000 people have signed online petitions calling for her to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for her activism.
Doctors at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where Yousufzai was treated said that although the bullet hit her left brow, it did not penetrate her skull but instead travelled underneath the skin along the side of her head and into her neck.
She was treated by doctors specializing in neurosurgery, trauma and other disciplines in a department of the hospital which has treated hundreds of soldiers wounded in conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"Malala is a strong young woman and has worked hard with the people caring for her to make excellent progress in her recovery," said Dave Rosser, the hospital's medical director.
"Following discussions with Malala and her medical team, we decided that she would benefit from being at home."
Yousufzai has already been leaving the hospital on a regular basis on "home leave" in recent weeks to spend time with her parents and younger brothers, who have a temporary home in central England, Rosser said.
"During those visits assessments have been carried out by her medical team to ensure she can continue to make good progress outside the hospital," Rosser said.
Yousufzai's father said in October he was sure she would "rise again" to pursue her dreams after medical treatment.

American Eagle pilot arrested at Minn. airport
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? An American Eagle pilot was suspended after failing a blood-alcohol test as he prepared to fly on Friday from Minneapolis to New York City, authorities said.
Police at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport said officers and a Transportation Security Administration agent smelled alcohol as they passed the pilot waiting to get on an elevator. The pilot was conducting preflight checks at about 6 a.m. when police boarded the aircraft, airport spokesman Patrick Hogan said.
Officers made him take a breath test and arrested him on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol, Hogan said. Passengers had not yet boarded the flight to New York's LaGuardia Airport, he said.
The 48-year-old pilot was released several hours later to airline employees. Hogan said airport police will wait until blood tests are processed before deciding whether to file charges against him.
Federal rules prohibit pilots from flying within eight hours of drinking alcohol or if they have a blood-alcohol level of 0.04 or higher, half the level allowed for motorists.
Hogan said preliminary results from the breath test were well over the legal limit, but he declined to release the results. He said the "more precise" results from the blood test would be released when they're available.
The pilot has been suspended pending an investigation, said Matt Miller, a spokesman for American Airlines, which uses American Eagle to operate shorter connecting flights. Both airlines are owned by AMR Corp. Miller said the company is cooperating with authorities and will conduct an internal investigation.
A woman who answered the phone at a North Carolina number listed in the pilot's name referred inquiries to the Air Line Pilots Association, his union. She said he has been a member of the union for 23 years, but declined further comment.
Messages left with union officials were not immediately returned.
The flight, with 53 passengers on board, was delayed about 2 ? hours while a replacement pilot was arranged, Miller said. It arrived in New York after noon.
The pilot was taken to Fairview Southdale Hospital to have a blood sample taken, then was returned to airport police before being released, Hogan said.
Pilots face drug and alcohol testing when they seek a job, are involved in an accident or return from alcohol rehabilitation. Some are selected for random tests. More than 10,000 pilots are tested each year and about a dozen flunk the alcohol part ? a number that has remained mostly steady for more than a decade, according to federal statistics.
Twelve pilots failed the breath test in 2011, 10 in 2010, and 11 in 2009, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
"Your odds of having an impaired driver on the highway are much higher, but there's a smaller margin for error in aviation," said James Hall, former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.
Drinking among pilots got more attention after notorious cases in the 1990s, including one in which a jury convicted all three pilots of a Northwest Airlines flight of flying under the influence. Federal rules were tightened.
Hall said most airlines and other transportation companies now have effective programs to identify and get treatment for employees with drug or alcohol problems. But, he said, an incident like Friday's should lead to a re-examination of protocols, including the 0.04 standard to testing procedures.

Keep Your New Year's Resolution With This Pasta Dish - Hartland ...
For 2013 I am going to continue to make healthier choices and find ways to eat food that not only tastes good, but is healthy.
If you, like me, made a similar resolution, you won't be disappointed with this recipe for Spaghetti Amatriciana. If you did not, I promise you'll like this as well.
To make this you'll need:
- 8 oz uncooked whole-wheat spaghetti ?
- 1/8 tsp table salt, or to taste (for cooking pasta) ?
- 1 tsp olive oil ?
- 6 slices uncooked reduced-fat bacon ?
- 1 large uncooked onion, finely diced ?
- 2 cups canned diced tomatoes ?
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes ?
- 1/8 tsp table salt, or to taste ?
- 1/8 tsp black pepper, or to taste ??
To start, cook the spaghetti in salted water until al dente; reserve 1/4 cup of the cooking water and then drain the pasta. Meanwhile, heat oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook the bacon, flipping once, until crisp; remove from the pan and set aside. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the onion; cook until lightly browned, stirring frequently. Then, crumble the bacon into pan and add the tomatoes and red pepper flakes; toss to mix. Add the pasta to the tomato sauce; toss to coat. If you need it, you can add the reserved pasta water as well until you get the right consistency. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The recipe serves four. Enjoy!

LA photographer killed while shooting Bieber's car
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Police say a paparazzo was hit by a car and killed after taking photos of Justin Bieber's white Ferrari on a Los Angeles street.
Los Angeles police Officer James Stoughton says the photographer, who was not identified, died at a hospital shortly after the crash Tuesday evening. Stoughton says Bieber was not in the Ferrari at the time.
The sports car was parked on the side of Sepulveda Boulevard near Getty Center Drive after a traffic stop. The photographer was struck as he walked across the boulevard after taking pictures.
Stoughton says no charges are expected to be filed against the motorist who hit the man.
A call to a spokesperson for the singer was not immediately returned Tuesday night.
