Highland Heights Elementary Students donates money to the - AFRAM

HOUSTON? The idea was simple enough: Ask students at Highland Heights Elementary School to donate money to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.? The students were challenged to raise $1,500 for the organization. No donation was too small because every bit helps.? But what began simply as an idea by school nurse Sholonda Smiley quickly grew into something much bigger than anyone could have imagined.? That?s because in just the first year for the fundraiser, within only a matter of weeks, the students raised more than 4 times as much as their original goal ? nearly $6,500.? They raised the money the old-fashioned way, without the support of a corporate sponsor, but by selling lemonade and asking family and friends to donate to this worthy cause.? Now thanks to their efforts, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will be able to help improve the quality of life for more blood cancer patients and their families.
Highland Heights Principal Kettisha Jones says not only did the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society benefit from this fundraiser but so did her students who were energized throughout the entire campaign.? More importantly, she says her students learned a life lesson that can?t be taught in the classroom, that we all have the power to make a lasting difference simply by an act of kindness or generosity. For nearly 60 years the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has had one mission: find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin?s disease, and myeloma. The society funds live saving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services for people battling cancer.? In fact, it is the world?s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to helping blood cancer patients live better, longer lives. Although much progress has been made in the battle against blood cancers, there is still more work to be done. That?s because according to the American Cancer Society, nearly 45,000 new cases of leukemia were diagnosed in the United States alone in 2011 and leukemia still accounts for 1 out of 3 cancers in children.

NHL, players' union open labor negotiations

NEW YORK ? The NHL and the players? union opened negotiations on a new labor deal Monday by meeting for about 2 1-2 hours.

Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly met with NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr, union special counsel Steve Fehr and several player reps at the league?s Manhattan offices.

"Members of our League Office staff and several of our owners met today with the NHLPA and various members of the players? negotiating committee at the League Office in New York," Daly said in a statement released after the meetings. "The meeting was very cordial and we hope it was constructive.

"Before breaking, the parties discussed follow-up steps and confirmed plans for future meetings. We have nothing further to report at this time."

Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis declined to comment as he left the building and hopped into a waiting car.

"Following today?s meeting, we will review the NHL?s initial presentation with the Players? committee before reconvening for further talks later next week." Donald Fehr said.

Among the players in attendance were Scott Hartnell of the Flyers, Rick DiPietro of the Islanders and George Parros of the Anaheim Ducks, Chris Campoli of the Canadiens, Dan Winnik of the Sharks, Brandon Dubinsky of the Rangers, Brad Boyes of the Sabres, Ron Hainsey of the Jets.

This was the first formal talks between the two sides. They come after the NHLPA?s executive board held a three-day meeting in Chicago earlier this week.

The collective bargaining agreement expires Sept. 15. There is fear the league could be heading toward another lockout.

The owners locked out the players in 2004 and it cost the NHL an entire season. The agreement that came out of that deal put in place a salary cap for teams for the first time.

Fehr, the former head of the baseball players? union who was hired by the NHLPA after the last labor deal was cut, said Wednesday at a news conference in Chicago that the players would be willing to start the season without a deal if negotiations were ongoing.

What this means is that business owners will now be able to enable their staff to use Square devices to accept payments without having to provide those employees with access to the same sensitive information that a business owner may see on their end. Until now, owners who wanted to set up their employees to also accept Square payments on the business's behalf would actually have to hand over their username and password - yes, the same username and password that allows them to login and see the the details of their business's account, all the transactions, and even their banking information. UN court acquits Karadzic of 1 genocide count

The ICTY has acquitted Karadzic of one of the two genocide charges he faces at the halfway stage of his long-running trial on Thursday, June 28, 2012. (AP Photo/Michael Kooren/Pool, File)

(AP) ? The Yugoslav war crimes tribunal acquitted former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic on Thursday of one of the two genocide charges he faces but upheld 10 other counts at the halfway stage of his long-running trial.

Presiding Judge Oh-Gon Kwon said prosecutors did not provide enough evidence to "be capable of supporting a conviction of genocide in the municipalities" ? a charge covering the mass killings, expulsions and persecution by Serb forces of Muslims and Croats from Bosnian towns early in the country's 1992-95 war.

While the dismissal of one genocide charge was a setback for prosecutors, judges upheld 10 more charges, including a genocide count covering Karadzic's alleged involvement in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys.

Prosecutors finished presenting their evidence in May and earlier this month Karadzic had asked judges to dismiss all 11 counts against him, saying prosecutors had failed to prove their case.

Karadzic's lawyer, Peter Robinson, welcomed Thursday's rejection of the genocide charge.

"Dr. Karadzic and myself both thought it was a courageous decision of the trial chamber to say at this stage of the case that there was no genocide in the municipalities in Bosnia in 1992," Robinson told The Associated Press outside the court. "But I do expect that the prosecution will want to appeal this decision."

Prosecutors had no immediate reaction.

But survivors of the Bosnia war, which left 100,000 people dead, said the decision could set back any reconciliation.

"We are shocked and disappointed," said Edin Ramulic, who heads an association of victims in Bosnia's Prijedor region. "We have no reason to hope now that the Serbs will go through catharsis and acknowledge that the non-Serbs in Prijedor had been killed, tortured, exterminated, raped."

Karazdic's trial will continue later this year on the 10 remaining counts and he will begin his defense on Oct. 16. He faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if convicted.

The court has repeatedly ruled that the massacre in Srebrenica was genocide, but has never convicted any suspect of genocide for the campaign of killings in the Bosnia towns and villages at the outset of the war.

Judges said Thursday there was enough evidence to uphold charges including murder and persecution in the early stages of the war, but the killings did not rise to the level of genocide, which requires prosecutors to prove intent to wipe out a specific group of the population in whole or in part.

Karadzic was arrested in 2008, 13 years after he was first indicted on charges of masterminding Serb atrocities during Bosnia's 1992-95 war. His trial started in 2009 and prosecutors rested their case in May.

Karadzic's former military chief Gen. Ratko Mladic also is on trial on almost identical charges. The first witness in that trial is scheduled to begin testifying early next month.

Catholic Family Land, A Place Set Apart for Families | Columbus ...

Posted on 27. Jun, 2012 by Emily Jaminet in Family, Living the Faith

Last week my family headed on a journey that was so unique and inspiring that I feel compelled to share it with you!? In all honesty, when a dear friend extended the invitation to us and another family to join them for a week at a place called ?Catholic Family Land? located near Bloomingdale, OH I was a little apprehensive.? Where it not for some slight familiarity with it from having gone to college nearby and the trust I have in my friend my imagination might have gotten the best of me.? Was this some strange Catholic adaptation of Disney Land?? Would I be forced to spend the entire time on my knees? singing traditional church hymns and studying the Catechism as my children wriggled and writhed about, yearning to run free?? Thankfully, I trusted in my friend?s advice and let the Holy Spirit guide and my family was richly blessed for it!? What we encountered was nothing short of the best vacation?? we have experienced as a family.

First, the setting ? Imagine a beautiful, hilly, rustic, rural campground where kids can ride their bike from your tent, RV or cabin to the main activity center in complete safety amongst other committed Catholic families who are all looking out for one another.? My husband and I marveled at the peace we found in this and remarked often that this is what it must have felt like for our grandparents when they were kids, so simple and wholesome.? Nestled in the middle of all this is a beautiful Chapel and a large pavilion area that offered a traditional snack bar where kids loved to gather to cool off with a pop or ice cream cone when the sun got a little too hot.

It was fun ? This unique place has everything that typical summer camps have to offer, complete with swimming pools, sports courts (basketball, tennis, sand volleyball, softball and soccer fields and more -all put to good use through planned tournaments for adults and children alike), a stable that offers pony rides for the littles and horse trail rides for the older kids, an enormous ball pit/jungle gym structure and one of the most amazing home made water slides ever that my kids judged to be ?better than Zoombeezi Bay?.? I must admit, after my husband coaxed me down it the first time, I ran back numerous times more to see if I could get more speed and catch more air off the top of the big drop!?? The many activities and events were led by a warm staff ranging from adults consecrated to this ministry to college youth ministers in training and high school aged kids, many of whom were Familyland visitors themselves for years.

It was active and relaxing all at the same time ? The kids had a blast riding their bikes from the cabin to the snack shack and then off for a quick dip in the community pool. As the Catholic mother of 6 children , I was in awe of how safe and wholesome it was and how it specifically met the needs of my whole family- including my husband! We had our own cabin with a full refrigerator and microwave (some are even air conditioned) and they offered a meal plan for dinner so mom could have a break from cooking!

It was faith impacting for the whole family ? Each day began with a beautiful Mass at 9am after breakfast, and was followed by a couple hours of religious activities for the kids (think VBS for the littles and Youth Group for the teens) while the parents enjoyed a speaker over coffee and donuts.? At lunch the family regrouped for lunch and the afternoon of recreation (sports, games, swimming, etc?).? In the midst of all this, the Sacrament of Confession and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament were available for hours each day and a Chaplet of Divine Mercy was recited during the 3 O?clock hour.? Amazingly, in this setting, the kids never batted an eye at participating in these worthy things and even came to appreciate that ?it isn?t that hard if you just don?t make a big deal out of it?.?? In the evenings, while the rest of the family was enjoying hanging out and roasting s?mores by the fire, the teens had organized youth group type gatherings which they always enjoyed and came back talking about excitedly.? Many parents related to us that the reason they keep coming back year after year is because their teens beg them to!? And it was wonderful for my husband and I to receive such encouragement and guidance in our struggles to be good, holy parents.? My husband laughed the other day as he recounted his experience of looking over at our son during a Homily on what fatherhood means and how fathers should act only to find him grinning and shaking his finger jokingly at him as if to say, ?you heard it, no more excuses!?

What really sets Catholic Family Land apart from all the other vacation destinations is that it was created out of a desire to provide families with a safe place to grow in holiness, not as a business to make money.? You don?t have to be a saint to go, you just have to be open to having a great time, and experience the love and healing that the Lord wants to offer your family. My main prayer during my week at Catholic Family Land was ?Thank you Father that I said yes, to this week!?. I am so thankful that we could experience the love and joy that the Lord is offering through this official Vatican Apostolate whose foundress is a mother of 13 and is recognized by the Catholic Church as a Servant of God (first step to being a Saint). It is no fluke that we saw license plates on cars from as far away as Vermont, Canada and Alaska and met some who flew in from California. Just think how blessed we are that? this place is just a ?hop and a skip from Columbus, OH?. So visit www.catholicfamilyland.org and consider it for your next vacation. They still have opening for the last ?fest? or session in August. They also have wonderful resources available for living out your faith at home found at? www.familyholiness.com and www.familycatechism.com.? Just do me one favor, don?t sign up too fast when the registration opens early next year for next summer/s sessions so I can get mine in before it fills up!

Travel and Leisure Magazine: The Perfect Destination for All Holiday ...

Going on vacation, each of us may want different things. Some of us are simply looking for a place to bask in the sun and enjoy blue waves, while others may wish to stroll around a foreign town and learn new cultures. Although some get their holiday fix from shopping, others may prefer to visit museums and marvel at ancient artifacts. As no one?s paradise destination is the same, then how can we fulfill all of these needs all at once? Fret not, whether for fun, knowledge, relaxation, or business; Greece is your go-to destination.

At one point in our history, Greece was the hub of civilization. It was so vibrant with culture and arts that even the Romans took cue from their customs and worships and made it their own. Thousands of years later, well beyond the times of Archimedes, Greece indeed has evolved into a modern tourist destination. Its many shopping centers and WHAT stand to testify to this. But first and foremost, Greece is still the center of culture and history it was. Within strolls length from our Athens hotel, for example, we can reach and rediscover the ruins of the Parthenon. Once the heat of the day is at its peak, we can easily walk into a restaurant and order a Greek salad in the comfort of the town center. It is this eclectic mix of the best of both ages that make Greece so interesting to visit. History buffs will feel right at home, while those seeking for a more serene environment can opt for a cruise on Greece?s glittering shores--Greece is known for the beauty and warmth of its lands as well as its people. If you are seeking for a vacation trip what will leave everyone in awe and satisfied, book a hotel Athens Greece; a trip to Greece is the very picture of a perfect vacation.

Best Practice: Tools and Tips for Divorced Parents and Divorce ...

Bargaining is often an essential component to how satisfied the parties feel about a negotiation. Making concessions back and forth reassures each party that the other side is willing to consider their concerns. But when an agreement is reached without either side making significant concessions, both parties may walk away dissatisfied, wondering if they could have achieved more. For a light-hearted look at this dynamic, watch this classic scene from Seinfeld where Kramer and Jerry?s father negotiate the sale of some raincoats.

How To Create Your Own Online Business Marketing Strategy ...

How To Create Your Own Online Business Marketing Strategy
Throughout these sets of articles we have looked at many different ways that one can create online business ideas. This is very important but it is equally important that you know how to market your business ideas so that people know what you have to offer. Within this article today we are going to look at what you can do in creating online business marketing that will sell your product.

We will look at two different methods that you can use but, to truly become successful at online marketing, you are going to have to make sure to learn about the subject as much as possible. Without a certain number of hits to your website every day, you can be guaranteed that you will not have great sales figures. The only way to get the hits that you want is through marketing and this is where this article comes in.

The first thing they can do in creating online business marketing is to make sure that your website is properly created. This article isn?t long enough to go into everything that you need for your website but you should make sure that your site is properly indexed by all of the major search engines so that you?re getting the maximum amount of natural search engine traffic you can. If you need more information about this, look in your library for books on search engine optimization.

This can help you redesign some pages on your website to make sure that you are getting maximum exposure. If you want to get more people to your website, you may also want to look into Adwords. Where this can benefit you is that you can bid on certain keywords so when people search on these keywords, your ads will come up. You will pay a certain amount per click that you receive from your ads being displayed. This is very good for you because you can target the audience that you want to bring to your website. By bidding on this, you are able to control your marketing costs and still receive leads.

Another way to get traffic coming to your site and help in creating online business marketing is to offer some free giveaways. There are a great deal of free forums out there where you can post about free giveaways at your website and this is an additional way to bring traffic to your website. The word free is one of the major hot buttons for most people so by offering something for free if they visit your website, you will be guaranteed to get a great deal of traffic. The way to run giveaways would be to have someone sign up for your newsletter in exchange for the free gift. This will help build your newsletter and create more online business marketing because you have a larger responsive list who is potentially interested in the products that you sell. The way to do this in a newsletter is to make sure you do not push products but rather soft sell them while pushing information your target audience can use.

Hopefully these two different methods of creating online business marketing can help you out. What we have told you about today only scratches the surface of the possible things you can do but these are two of the more popular methods and they are very low-cost methods so that you do not have to use a great deal of money that you may need to run the business.

HBT: AL continues to dominate interleague play

The final interleague game of 2012 ended when Nick Swisher caught the last out of last night?s Yankees-Mets game. That brought the tally to?142 wins for the American League, 110 for the National League. Put differently, that?s a .563 winning percentage for the junior circuit, or a 91-win pace over the course of a 162-game season.

Ben Lindbergh of Baseball Prospectus has the numbers for interleague play since its inception, and they?re pretty ugly for the NL. The AL has won the series for nine straight years and, overall, have won at a .525 clip, going?2079-1883.

No one gets a prize for it or anything, but it is pretty telling regarding the relative strengths of the two leagues.

Are you going to use Klout to choose your future real estate agent in ...

I suppose that I am feeling a bit more ?sheepish? than usual. ?I know that you know, there is?change occurring in this ?free world?. ?Curtailing of media sources, internet sites and within other aspects of life, used to influence our choices and causing us to make?determinations?on the whim of those pulling the levers.

What about choosing a real estate agent? ?If you had a friend that you liked, and they sold real estate, would you think twice about choosing them? ?If you hesistated, it is probably because you are worried about ruining your friendship with them. ?You have heard the saying, ?never mix business with pleasure ? or Never mix business with friendship?? ?I say Hog Wash to that old saying. But only if your friend is the BEST at what they do?

I would use my friend if they were involved in a service industry that I needed to use. ?As far as I see it, there is much more accountability in friendship when hiring a service professional. ?But, how good is your friend at what they do?

One of the problems with hiring a friend might be that they are horrible at the service they provide. ?Maybe they are hated or they are the ?talk of your sphere? in the way they don?t pack the gear to serve in their chosen industry.

That is when you have a?definite?dilemma. ?Your ?friendship? will now be tested when you don?t use them to help you and especially if they find out. ?How honest can you be with them? ?Can you say to them, ?Hey, I was going to use you for? ?But you are horrible!? ? or ? ?So and so is better???

If you don?t have a friend in the Real Estate business ? then how do you choose? ?Do you rely on one of the large real estate syndication websites to choose the agent that is paying for their service and for your personal information? ?What about choosing an agent that is constantly killing trees mailing stuff to your home. ?I know, what about the agent that is knocking on your door interrupting your private family time ? wanting to know if you want to sell or buy ? or if you know anyone that does? ?All these are the ?interruption? type of marketer.

What about an agent that is tops in their Field within the Santa Clarita real estate world, but always asks for permission to help you? ?Permission only asked when you are ready to do the hiring? ?

That is the way we love to play this real estate game. ?We are dug in within all of the Social Media platforms within the Real Estate community. ?We offer that to our clients when it comes to getting them what they want that is real estate related. Selling a home or helping them find the perfect one to buy. ?Before you embark on a real estate ?seek and destroy? mission ? try to contact a local expert that is appearing high in the search engines from writing content and answering questions. ?That is the truly the ?sweet spot? within the real estate representation world.

Small businesses await health care ruling | Health and Fitness

* What is the impact on companies if the Supreme Court upholds the law ? or tosses it entirely or in part?

NEW YORK ? Small business owners will be watching when the Supreme Court issues its ruling on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The overhaul of the nation?s health care system requires that by 2014 all businesses with more than 50 employees must provide health care benefits that are deemed affordable under the law.

Opponents of the act have targeted a key provision known as the individual mandate. It requires all people to buy health insurance or pay a penalty. The rationale for the mandate is that the more people in the health insurance pool ? in particular, younger and healthier people who need little health care ? the cheaper care will be for everyone. Opponents of the individual mandate contend that it?s unconstitutional to require people to buy health insurance. The court has the power to uphold the law or rule all or part of it unconstitutional.

With a decision expected this week, here are some questions and answers about how this affects small business owners:

Q. What will owners have to do if the law is upheld in its entirety?

Employers will be subject to the law if they have 50 or more full-time workers or the equivalent of full-time workers (two people working half-time are the equivalent of one full-timer). Small businesses that don?t comply with the law ? either by not offering insurance or by offering insurance that?s not considered affordable ? will have to pay penalties. To be considered affordable, the insurance must pay for at least 60 percent of covered health care expenses, and employees may not be forced to pay more than 9.5 percent of their family income (before deductions and adjustments) for coverage offered by employers. Penalties are set according to a complicated formula in the law; they start at $2,000 per worker when there is no coverage, with the first 30 workers excluded from the calculation. Companies also face penalties if they provide coverage that isn?t deemed affordable.

Employers get a tax deduction for providing insurance, but some business owners may decide it?s cheaper to skip the insurance and pay the penalty, says Paul Keckley, executive director of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, the health-services research arm of Deloitte LLP.

?You can lose the tax deduction, pay the penalty and be better off,? Keckley says. But he also points out that the penalties are scheduled to rise over time, and so eventually employers are likely to comply with the law.

The law also requires small businesses to provide what?s called an essential health benefits package. The states are permitted to determine what benefits should be contained in policies that are issued in their states. That means that businesses that have employees in more than one state will have to comply with each state?s requirements.

Employers can buy insurance from health insurers. Others may opt to join companies known as professional employer organizations, like Administaff or ADP?s TotalSource division, that provide health insurance and other human resources services. The law creates what are being call health insurance exchanges ? markets where employers and individuals can search for the best rates. John Arensmeyer, chief executive of the Small Business Majority, an organization that lobbies on behalf of small businesses, says the exchanges essentially give small businesses negotiating power on insurance rates that they haven?t had in the past.

Average Feature Film Length ? Independent Filmmaking Tips For ...

If you are just starting out to create your feature film you may have a lot of questions. Filmmakers tend to approach making a film in many different ways. Some of them use a script or a book, while others may just go with an idea off the top of their head. The question may come up regarding how long the average feature film length should be. A better question is how many pages of script is needed to make your film the length that you want it to be.

There is no exact answer as to how long your film should be. You may have a very short script of maybe 5 ? 10 pages. On the other hand your script may be 100 pages long. Then your film length will vary depending on the changes made during the film process itself.

To help determine the length of your feature film you can use the industry average: 30 seconds of footage per page of script. Keep in mind that that is a rough guess considering that long extensive spoken lines will take longer to do that shorter or fewer spoken lines. This is something to remember if you want your film length to be a specific amount of time when completed.

If you have made any films before you will already know that there is a lot of editing to be do. Changing the layout can certainly change the time frame of the film. When you shoot 60 minutes of footage it may actually end up being closer to 30 ? 40 minutes of feature film.

The biggest problem most filmmakers face with their scrips is making sure that they have enough detail to create enough footage. It takes approximately 30 pages of script to make a 15 minute production. And then, if you edit out certain areas you will need to lengthen your script to meet your goal of a 15 minute film.

When you have a team of writers, or even just one, the task of editing the script is made much easier. Your job as filmmaker would include reading the script over and making notes about it which will help the writers to expand the story in the areas you want more details or information.

If you are one of the lucky ones who has the creative knack of expanding out a script as you go then the actual length of the script is not all that important. Certainly quite a few filmmakers have taken a short script and made it into an extensive feature film. Experience definitely helps a filmmaker fine tune a script and the longer you?ve been doing it, the easier it is to flesh out a script. the main ingredient to succeeding is having a good script to begin with that is creative and has plenty of detail. This can help you get a grasp of how long your feature film length will be and make the whole creation process more enjoyable.

Civil partnership visa = civil union?

In UK/EU law does applying for a civil partner visa create a civil partnership?

I have to prove 2 years of us being together which sounds somewhat like a civil partnership. A civil partner can take half of everything and I've loads of mates who've been cleaned out by domestic and foreign partners alike.

Can I get my partner a partner visa or is this something a little more?

(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky's lawyers said Saturday they tried to quit at the start of jury selection in his child sex abuse trial because they weren't given enough time to prepare, raising an argument on the trial's speed that could become the thrust of an appeal.

And one of the jurors who convicted Sandusky of 45 child sex abuse counts said Saturday he was swayed by the "very convincing" testimony of eight accusers who said the ex-Penn State assistant football coach molested them for years.

"It's hard to judge character on the stand, because you don't know these kids," juror Joshua Harper told NBC's "Today" show. "But most were very credible ? I would say all."

A day after Sandusky's conviction, his lawyers disclosed they felt too unprepared to adequately defend him because of how quickly the case was brought to trial. Experts have said the seven months between Sandusky's November arrest and trial was fast-paced by Pennsylvania standards.

"We told the trial court, the Superior Court and the Supreme Court we were not prepared to proceed to trial in June due to numerous issues, and we asked to withdraw from the case for those reasons," attorney Joe Amendola told The Associated Press.

The issues included a scheduling conflict with a defense team member and the need to read a cache of documents produced by a lengthy grand jury investigation. Judge John Cleland denied their request.

The attorneys raised other issues that could be part of the future appeal, saying a mistrial was sought and denied over a repetition at trial of a brief part of a November interview Sandusky had with NBC's Bob Costas.

Jurors in the two-week trial convicted Sandusky of 45 of the 48 counts against him, meaning Sandusky, 68, likely will die in prison.

Harper said the accusers who testified one by one of horrific abuse at Sandusky's hands were each believable, "but then also the fact that we saw this corroborating story between all of them. It was very convincing."

Then Sandusky's impassive face when the verdict was read was confirmation for the jury, he said.

"I looked at him during the reading of the verdict and just the look on his face. No real emotion," he said, "because he knew it was true."

Harper said jurors had some issues with the testimony of Mike McQueary, a then-assistant who said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in the Penn State showers in 2001; jurors acquitted Sandusky on one count relating to the incident.

The case is poised to move to an investigation of university officials' role in reporting the charges; two ex-school administrators face trial on charges they didn't properly report McQueary's account of the suspected abuse in 2001.

Almost immediately after the verdict, Penn State President Rodney Erickson signaled an openness to quickly settle potential civil lawsuits arising from the convictions, saying the school "wants to provide a forum where the university can privately, expeditiously and fairly address the victims' concerns and compensate them for claims."

The university recently reported a $1.8 billion endowment. But both sides have reasons not to want to go to court, said Jason Kutulakis, a Harrisburg-area lawyer who specializes in child welfare and juvenile law. Victims are reluctant to get on the stand and have their credibility attacked, he said.

But "Penn State's got so much egg on their face, they probably just want to make it all go away," he said.

For now, the school is facing one lawsuit from an accuser, Travis Weaver, who was not among those represented in the criminal case against Sandusky.

Lawyers for McQueary, who testified against Sandusky, have signaled their intent to sue, along with a lawyer for one accuser, so-called Victim 5.

Jeff Anderson, who represents Weaver, said that he represents more victims of Sandusky's and that he will ask the court to allow him to begin seeking information from Penn State in Weaver's case.

The next step is to determine the extent of Penn State's culpability, lawyers say. In part, that means finding out who in the university's upper ranks knew Sandusky was preying on boys and could have stopped it.

The former Penn State officials facing charges, athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz, are charged with lying to a grand jury about what they knew of a 2001 incident in which McQueary said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a football team shower.

A separate investigation by ex-FBI director Louis Freeh, who was hired by Penn State's board of trustees to investigate the university's handling of the Sandusky allegations, is due later this summer.

Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno was fired for a failure of leadership for not going to the police after McQueary told him about that incident. The scandal also caused the departure of university president Graham Spanier.

Philadelphia-based lawyer Fortunato Perri Jr., who followed the trial, said the jury's dismissal of the charge involving the 2001 shower incident could help Curley and Schultz' defense.

"You've now had a jury kind of preview your case with respect to the credibility of McQueary, and they didn't believe him," Perri said. "Who knows if the next jury would believe him or not believe him?"

But the administrators' attorneys would probably be precluded from introducing the acquittal evidence at the separate trial, Perri said.

Sandusky's sentencing should be in about three months; an exact date hasn't been set. Because of the severity of the charges and mandatory minimum sentences he faces an effective life sentence.

Until his next court date, Sandusky is one of 272 inmates at the Centre County Correctional Facility, seven miles from the Penn State campus. He was kept under watch overnight and is allowed access to some personal items including a prayer book, and can get visits from family, friends and attorneys.

Rominger said he planned to visit him on Sunday.

Building a team in your painting business | The Blogging Painters

Since 2003, we?ve worked with over 120 different painting contractors, helping them to successfully grow their business. In that?experience, we?ve found a handful of things that are universal. One is the?responsibility?that owners feel for the work of their company. Consequently, when business owners try to grow their team, specifically Crew Leaders, we hear quite often, ?I?struggle?to find good people. I can?t just hand over my jobs to anybody!?

There?s a lot of truth in that statement. ?But there is a little bit of head trash as well. ?No, there may not be people in your company who have the talent, skills, and knowledge to take on a Crew Leader?s role ? right now. ? But Crew Leaders, along with a High Performance Team in general, can be built. ?It takes time, commitment, mistakes, and small steps.

Below are six practical steps we have found to be highly successful. Use the items below to create a plan for your team. Then stick to it for at least six months. ? After six months, our experience tells us you will have come a long way and you will want to keep going.

  1. Understand that you can?t hire yourself.?You are unique; and we are all different. In the book, Now, Discover Your Strengths, Marcus Buckingham (p53-56) descibes?eloquently?how we have difficulty accepting this. Our talents come so easy to us, he says, that we often think everyone sees the world as we do- and shares our talents. They don?t.
  2. Tell your people what?s in your head.?Communicate, communicate, communicate. Then tell them again. As the owner, you are constantly thinking about what?s important to your business?s success. Meet regularly (weekly) with your key people to make sure they know what you think is important. Tell them where the company is headed and how their position is important to getting there.
  3. Listen to what your people have to say. If you are going to share with them what you think is important, be ready to take some feedback. It?s not about just you anymore, it?s about the team. ?Your people may be more in-tune with your business than you think. Listen to what they have to say. ?Trust them to give you honest and meaningful intel.?Implement their ideas.
  4. Create clear goals and celebrate!?Leaders define winning and then go after it. Big goals, little goals, weekly goals, daily goals. Goals make work meaningful. How do you know when to celebrate success without a clear end point? Without goals, your company is either flailing in the wind or continuously reaching for a moving target. Make sure your people know where the short-term finish lines are ? and celebrate when you get there! (it makes moving on the next goal a lot more meaningful.)
  5. Commit to Training and Documenting. For every one free-throw in a game, how many free-throws do you think Michael Jordan took in practice? ?Probably a lot; and he never stopped. ?The best at anything are always training ? big things and little things. ?Give your people the same opportunity. ?Create a training culture by turning mistakes into learning?opportunities. Start documenting how you do things. Pick one topic per month,?for example, ?First Day of a Job.? ?Write down what the steps are, train your leaders, and revise as?necessary?with your?people?s?input.
  6. Make sure the job fits the talent. Not everyone is a star Crew Leader. And star Crew Leaders aren?t always the best painters.?If an employee is not working out, review with them the systems and position they are in to make sure there is a fit. It might be time to move on, making room for others to move up. ?On the other side of the coin, who among your team is hiding in the shadows? ?The number one reason people don?t volunteer is they were not asked. Who on your team might be waiting for you to ask?

Are all the decisions in your company going thru you, like sand thru the center of an hourglass? ?Getting out of the ?Hourglass? means bringing others into the inner circle? sharing the load. ?This can be a scary notion. But by including others in key activities and decisions you will be opening up?possibilities for?the future. Give your people the regular opportunity to stretch their wings, even if its just a little bit at a time. ?The result is to sharpen the talent, skills, and knowledge of your people, and slowly hand over more and more?responsibility.

Have a great week!
